it does look like animals staked off
could it be dogs? not sure they'd trample the grass so much as a goat would eat it

If they walked around it enough they would eventually kill off the grass in those areas.

I don't know, but a property to the north has it as well. http://g.co/maps/6jt2v

I would say percolation tests, but that's a shitload of holes.

EDIT: It looks like it may be from trash burns, there's some smoke just below them on the same property.

Looks like a Prairie Dog Village to me. We have some around here that cover several acres and have hundreds of mounds/holes. And the mounds can be 8-10ft in diameter and 2-3ft high with a hole in the center, some mounds can be that size with 2 or 3 holes

I would have said that the occupant got a metal detector until more were pointed out near by. Perhaps they both got in on the hobby?

Edit: Oops. This is CZroe. Anyway, I right clicked and selected "What's here?" and Google replied "Smith's Septic Tank Service." Mystery solved?

Those spots look like trees/larger shrubs were pulled out/removed. Junipers and overgrown bushes will kill the grass for a decent sized circle and look just like that.

This is probably the correct answer.

Pretty sure it's not fire pits. 1) People who burn often usually use the same spot each time. 2) The pits would be blackened.

You've got the guys address, phone him up and ask.
Heh. Did it.

Spoke with Mrs Smith. It's not her property. There's a fence that separates the 2 right behind her house/pool. The big area is pasture with cows. She says there have been hay bales there but it could also be where the cows have made places to lay.

Damn, I love the south. People are nice and helpful.

Ma'am, this is going to be the strangest question you've ever heard....Then basically what the OP said that we were looking for an address and found hers. Then the argument ensued about the crop circles.

Glad to hear you started it that way. ;)

it must be hay/cow related, i found this within a mile of my house
we have cows/hay fields/farmers all over here. it is common for cow farmers to carry (with a truck/tractor , they weigh 600-900 #) the large round hay bails out into cow pastures and drop them for the cows to eat. it would leave a round spot of uneaten hay that would look like that, i think

I wonder if these marks are some type of "chemical burn"? I don't mean an actual burn but any type of chemical that in high concentration would kill off the grass quickly. If it's related to cows I'm thinking fertilizer or something like that.
