Same thing I was thinking - unless there is a property line, or mineral rights line that prevented the systemic grew from going further away from the house.

A few years ago I found an area off in the woods were an oil company had been doing systemic test; the holes were around 3 feet across. The holes in the image look larger then 3 feet.

Moles or gophers. Our neighborhood was infested with moles this year. I caught 4 in my yard and 5 in my neighbor's. Her front lawn looked like that pic, mole mounds. Only thing that kills them is traps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_(animal)
