I need to know this for my history project and a search for welfare and welfare reform doesn't yield anything.

I need to know the year and act that brought the welfare system that somewhat resembles what we know today into existance.

If you care, I am doing a project on the social/political/economic issues of the Progressive Era, in particularily the plight of the poor (immigrant workers), and I need to discuss what government reforms were passed since then (no matter how later) that gave support to the lowest class.

Russ -

You know that I agree with you on many issues. However my AP hist teacher, like most people that work at educational institutions, is an extreme liberal. I believe she voted for Nader. Me and her clash on every issue possible and while I do believe in the Industrial/Military Right's agenda (altough not the Religious Right, don't get me started....), expressing Libertarian views on a presentation based from "The Jungle" would not get me a good grade.

Elemental007,

I completely understand the difficult battle you wage in school. Stay strong and confident in the knowledge that you are already wiser then she.

I finally realized that it was futile arguing with her when she gave me a 54 on an essay that I took sometime in late october, at the height of the political heat. I really pissed her off the day before calling her Lettuce-Head worship a threat to our national well-being because if we worry about the environment over our national infrastructure (i.e. oil drilling in the alaskan reserves), we ar making our country dependent on foreign solutions and that could cost human lives here and now. And so forth...the next day I took an essay where virtually everyone made an A, and she gave me a 54. I took it to subschool and had it graded by other teachers and she ended up giving me an 82 or something. Since then I have not tried to make sense of her extreme liberal arguements, and am now making a mid A in an AP class.

Sigh, when the Depression was upon society, they did what they could. It was the failure of 20's style Capitalism that brought about Welfare in the US. Perhaps that Welfare system needs changed or is now outdated, but it's creation was far from "stupidity".

sandorski,

Wrong. The free market would have righted itself just fine without Federal Piggy deciding to take care of us from cradle to grave. The stupidity of DC turned a short-term crash in to a long term depression.

Ever hear of the Smoot Hawley Act? That is the REAL reason for the extended problems.

Elemental, don't let her win. I aggitate all of my prof's here at UT Austin constantly. If it's anything you can prove or contest, as you did before, threaten to do it again if she messes with you. Threaten to escalate it to the school board for being persecuted for your personal beliefs.
Explain that you will not tolerate your grades being submarined because of her personal prejudice against your political views. She must learn to judge papers based on their logic, evidence, reasoning, grammar, and construction. You should not cow-tow at this point because of her political perspective. You have precedent on your side at this point, and club her upside the head with it if need be.

If you're going to look back on it and feel like you sold out to get a grade, take the effort.

But maybe I'm just a rabble-rouser who doesn't know when to shut up...

Aggitate. Aggitate. Aggitate.

Elemental007,

Smoot Hawley was protectionist legislation that literally killed free trade. It was passed in 1930 which, of course, was the WORST possible timing for businesses in this country.

Agitate =)

But it's not worth it...nothing I can do will change her views and it's not worth making myself look like an ass in front of the class trying to clash with her on everything. They don't like it, and there are a few hot girls in that class that I don't want to not like me :)

I am bound to believe that FREE TRADE is a double-edged sword. I will explain more in detail later, but rest assured before I go to sleep I will present an arguement, after I finished this presentation

elemental,
When you get to college it will be much, much worse. Academia is the most closed-minded institution in American society, even as it claims the opposite. It is a cancer. But don't worry - it's not the real world. All the academian liberal arts guys get their tenure and write BS papers and journal articles about how men are evil and the greeks were black and anytime they see any difference between anyone they call it oppresion. But they can live in their own little pseudo society called Academia and it won't really affect the real world. So fight the good fight.
