What about these temps?

I have a T-Bird 800 on an Asus A7V Bios 1005A and when I am on the net I have a temp of the CPU of 41 C and MB of 26 C. It doesn't change much from this. When I play a game it goes up 2-3 C tops to 44-45 C. Is these temps OK? I am using a Coolermaster DP5-6H51 heatsink fan combo with Thermal tape that came with it.This cooler is rated to work up to 1.2 GHZ T-Birds anyway. I have Artic Silver but I didn't use it. I had Radio Shack cheapo stuff and switched to Artic Silver on a CPU that broke and it made little difference there. I am looking for your opinions on this.

One more thing ---room temp is about 22 C.

Have you tried a cpu-laoding program, like RC5, or Seti@home, or Prime95?

Also, socket a boards don't measure temperature changes very well(often compresses them by factors of anywhere from 2 to 5). Check the site in my sig for more info. For these reasons, Arctic silver will usually provide a greater core temp drop than the thermistor will report.

Lastly, your temps are fine for the heatsink you are using, but it also depends on how muhc higher it gets with a full-cpu loader(games usually do not do this).

I was a little leary about doing it ----but I did anyway. I scraped off the thermal tape off my Coolermaster DPH-6H51 heatsink fan combo and off the core. I couldn't get all of the thermal tape residue at the sides of the core but I got all of it off the top part of the core. The Thermal tape residue has a bubble gum dexterity to it and I was afraid of damaging the core but scraping around the base and the edges too hard. I did scrape most of it off around the edges but not all of it. I then applied some Artic Silver on the core evenly on the smooth clean surface which I treated with Isoprophyl Alcohol beforehand and my web surfing load on the core is 39 C. I am pleased with the 2-3 degree drop. I just need to leave well enough alone now because I broke the last CPU by constantly cleaning and reapplying Artic Silver to get just the right amount on it and chipped 2 corners off of the core.That may have happened by the fact that one of the pads fell off and I glued it back on and it didn't seat right when I put the heatsink on. As far as I am concerned THIS is the right amount. I assume that the bits and pieces of thermal tape residue that is NOT on the top of the core will be OK -------AM I CORRECT IN ASSUMING THIS ? By the results I am getting I think so but was looking for your opinion !!!

if its not interfereing with the area between cpu slug and heatsink, it should have no adverse effects.
