I work in the hardware tech dept of my University. We started building new 1ghz computers for certain faculty members, and all I could do was feel bad for the overclockable parts. All this potential for simply email and microsoft word.

Cpu - Axia "Y" 1ghz @ 1ghz :(
Ram - Infineon pc133 @ cas3 :( again
video - 32meg tnt2 (not the greatest, but would love to see some games)
harddrive - 30gig ibm 75gxp (dma disabled)

I thought these poor parts needed some sympathy. Remember to pour a little out next time for the "lost" homies.

Why cant you enable DMA? That is not overclocking or running out of spec in any way.

It is just university standards to leave it disabled. We don't install the 4 in 1's either.

I'm not sure who makes the policies, I just recently started working there and don't know the chain of command. Basically, our policy is not to change anything that Windows 2000 makes operable. Since 2000 boots in PIO mode, we leave that. The video works, so we don't install any 3rd party drivers. The only drivers we install are for sound cards and nics that aren't detected. Those poor poor machines.

It does seem a shame to see those parts not being used to full potential but trust me,after awhile the "vanilla" installation will become your best friend :)

What, so they run 640x480x16 colors?
