They are talking to the Republican base because that's all they are able to/programmed to do. This is a huge political loser for Republicans, but they make these sorts of mistakes fairly frequently because what right wing media personalities need to do to keep their audience is often at odds with the smartest political strategy.

Generally speaking if your attack is based on your opponent loving his son too much you are aiming squarely at your own foot.
