What a pain to cancel AOL dial up...

Just helped my parents cancelling their super slow dail up aol service, got routed to an indian lady with a hard to understand accent. She kept on pushing the free months to me with no charge. Had to repeat myself like 10 times I dont want AOL service anymore and do not place my account on hold.

Hopefully AOL will cancel my parents' dial up service for good from the recent lawsuits.

How were your AOL cancellation experiences?

I got many a free month of AOL trying to cancel.

One time after I successfully canceled, the guy tried to sell me their "AOL For Dummies" book. My eyes rolled back pretty far on that one.

Dunno, haven't had AOL service in 8 years or more

I heard that if you don't specifically say "Do not place my account on hold", your AOL service will reactive the account again if you accidently dial and sign in again.

The Government needs to step in on what is clearly illegal business practices of this Company.

A friend of mine here no longer uses her computer at home, AOL just continously hassled her on continuing service and she kept saying, "I no longer have a computer to even have your service!"

Seriously got to do something about this Company. :|

Bangalor Tech Support: Hello, thanking you for to be calling A-merica Online. My name is Dee-annhowmayIhelpyou?
Me: Umm... yeah... I need to cancel my account, username IsigneduptogetmyfreeXbox.
Idiot Woman From Bangalor: Well Ma'am, we here at AOL are sorry to see you going, but we would like to extend to you an offer to continue with AOL for....
Me: I'm a guy, and no thanks, I need to cancel it permanently, forever, I don't want it, I can't use it, I have internet already, I don't want AOL. To reiterate, there's nothing you could possibly say, at all, period, that would make me extend my contract. Not even if you offered me $10 million and my own f%$#ing island.
Re-Re Who Barely Speaks English: I'm sorry to hear that Ma'am, but do you know about the services that are to be coming with AOL? AOL offers amazing <uninteligible> pictures <thick accent> chat with NAMBLA <unintelligible except you can tell the conjugation is wrong> haXX0Rz j00 d00d <garbled, not english, sounds like she's coughing up a hairball> so if that is okay I will go ahead and extend your contract for you at the low low price of $25.99 a month UNTIL THE END OF TIME, MWA HA HA HA HA!!!
Me: Erm... uhh... (franticly thinks) well... I would, but my religion forbids it. Yeah... that's it. My local minister says using AOL is a pox unto the earth and I'll go to hell. Yeah....
Person Working At Job Stolen From USA Via Outsourcing: Ah. Well Ma'am, we here at AOL are sorry that you will be leaving us, but please to be calling us any time and we will be happy to welcome you back to the AOL family.
Me: Sorta like the Manson family?
Idiot: Yes, I love their music.
Yeah, AOL is such a pain thanks to outsourcing. Probably the worst offender in terms of crappy phone support.

I canceled AOL years ago, way before out sourcing came into being. They were a PIA then-from finding out what number to call (couldn't cancel online-at least then) and then having to say no twenty times before it sunk in.

Yep... I kept getting free months, then eventually said "NO, I don't want to continue with it. Just cancel the bloody thing altogether."

so sort of like the Best Buy ESP?

I signed up with AOL for that freevideogames.com website for points. I cancelled a couple weeks later and said I was going to study abroad the following week and would be there for a year. They still tried to ask me a bunch of questions but the conversation end up going something like this.

CSR: Oh abroad, where to? We can offer you this, this, this

Me: Look I know you're going to ask me a million questions but please just stop asking them and cancel my account right now please.

CSR: Well it's my job sir to ask you...

Me: Well it's also your job to respect the customer's wishes and understand that Cancel means I want it cancelled now.

CSR: Please hold. (a minute later) Sir your account is cancelled your confirmation # is *****.

I know I would've been on the phone for a good 20-30 minutes but managed to cut it down to about 5 with that method.

every time i tried to cancel they gave me another 3 or 4 months to use it... until about a year later they let me cancel once and for all

my parents still have AOL, costs them 9.95 a month, just so they can keep their email address, which gets spammed like crazy.

Lets see... Cancelled in January (I know, I know. I only had them because I just moved and DSL wasn't installed yet). Then about last week I got this yellow card in the mail saying that my account is on hold because I haven't been paying (which makes sense, I closed the credit card they had on file, but the bastards were trying to charge me anyway). So, I call them up and they tell me "someone" gave them authorization on February 8th to reopen the account, which is rubbish. It was my gf's boss's bday and we were both out until midnight, and I don't know what kind of policy lets their people call customers past midnight.

Then, I get told that they can't cancel the charges because my account is closed, so I have to give them a credit card. So I talk to the lady for about half an hour while really only speaking for about 5 minutes because of all that sh1t they have to say. Then I get routed to billing which erases my account (2 minutes tops) and get routed to cancellation. Thats the funny part, everywhere else spoke english just fine, but cancellation department was obviously in india. So then after another 20 minutes of arguing after waiting 20 minutes on hold, I finally cave after they give me a year free and I just need to call back in 8-10 business days to cancel it again.

This is all funny considering aol just submitted a settlement offer to settle 2 class action lawsuits.

I had AOL like three times, once for like 4 years on dial up, after that when i got cable i sign up twice for there free trials.

both times that i called to cancelled it only took a minute to cancel, no BS no nothing, why because i told them i had gone Chapter 11, thats what i usually say to cancel with AOL.

ROTFLMAO!

it took me 2 hours to cancel my 3 month free AOL. The Indian lady kept offering me more and more free months and I said no that's ok and she was like what is the harm in taking another 8 months free. They just don't give up and they keep on asking you to stay on with more free months. I finally told her I was leaving the country and wouldn't return for another year but that still didn't matter cause AOL is available all over the world .. after yelling at her she finally got the point and canceled me.

How were your AOL cancellation experiences?

I have canceeled them for people on three different occasions and it's been painless.

The first two times I told them I was moving out of the country and the third time I told them I sold my computer.

A little judicious lying makes life easier.

If I had AOL I'd try telling them that I plan on committing suicide soon and that I will not be needing their service from the grave.

Three years ago I lived for a short time in an area without high speed access and so I used AOL. When I called to cancel, it took 30 minutes to get them to cancel and then I was told that if I wanted to reactivate my account, I had only to sign in my name on aol's webmail and it would automatically reactivate. So, after you cancel, don't touch your aol screen names or email.

It also helps if you cancel, shred and burn the credit card you ordered the service with.
