I have a DiamondMax From Maxtor 7200rpm 15gb .. works fine but the hum it makes is loud and the thunder it makes when reading/writing is just plain ANNOYING.

Who can suggest good quality brand of fast and NOT noisy 20gb+ Hard disks ?

Thanks in advance.

The 15gig Maxtor should be a Diamondmax 40 or 45. I had one before and it was whisper quiet. However the plus 60 series is quite loud. I have a 40 gig and I think it might have to do with the Acoustic Management.

I think my DM Plus 40 is pretty noisy, although I haven't compared it to other 7200rpm IDE drives.

Your drive could be faulty. I can quite assure you your drive should be near silent. I have a DM40 and a DM80 and both don't produce too much noise with the latter being a whipser noise drive.

I found that one of the drives used in one PC is really quiet. It's a Samsung SpinPoint 7200 rpm 10 GB drive. It's an excellent drive, not only is it quiet, its performance is so much better than that of the 4 GB 5200 rpm Maxtor HD that's in the same PC.

Chalk it up to rotational speed and areal density.

My Western Digital 40 Gig (400bb is the model I think) is EXTREMELY quiet. It makes less noise than the system fans, and I'm even using Panaflo's.

If the hard drive makes more noise than the system fans, then there is something terribly wrong it.

I have a DiamondMax (not sure what no.) 20Gb and it makes absolutely NO noise atall from outside the case (I don't have loud case fans neither) I thought the drive wasn't working when I got it, I was shocked.

Something must be wrong.

MY GOD, HAS NO ONE POSTED THIS YET ????

Maxtor Hard Drives can be set to Quiet or Perfomance by OEMs
If you bought your HDD oem, I'd assume they set it to Performance.

You can download an app from Maxtor to change the setting to Quiet.
It works on OBM 75GXP drives too!

I THOUGHT EVERYONE KNEW THIS - IT'S BEEN POSTED MANY TIMES

my fujitsu MPF3XXXAH series (7200rpm) 20GB is inaudible...

the MPG series is just as quiet...they use fluid dynamic bearing instead of ball-bearing which contributes to its quiet running/seeks...it's also supposed to improve shock resistance.

i haven't heard anything quieter

I have had the Maxtor DiamondMax 30Gb 7200rpm drive and it is extremely noise. It gives off a loud high pitched kindof humming or whinning noise. Anyway I finally got sick of it and called Maxtor they told me to run the diagnostics on the disk that comes with the drive. I think the utility is called PowerMax. I ran the advanced test (it took awhile) and my drive failed to they are sending me a new one.

Boot with the setup disk that came with the drive and when you get a menu asking for what language you would like at the bottom of the list it says PowerMAx run that and if it fails it will give you an error code and they will replace it.

I had one that was driving me crazy from it's whine. Not disk access "clicking", but a whine. Tried to get RMA from Maxtor, but they made me run a utility to verify the drive was "bad". I told them it passed, but still was too loud. They gave me an RMA. Replacement drive sounded the same. Ugh...

I finally removed it from the 3.5" bay and set it on a piece of soft foam in a 5.25" bay. Now I can't hear it at all. Not a proper fix, but it works!

I have an old UDMA33 7200RPM Maxtor 20GB and it's definitely a lot louder than my system fans. Where is the utility to set my HD to quiet or performance mode? I also downloaded the PowerMax but it doesn't detect my HD as a Maxtor drive?

No need to shout dood. Quite mode causes you to lose some preformance. For the same or better preformance, you can get a quieter. In which case, try an IBM 60GXP, tho a maxtor Diamondmax Plus will also work.

Not a good idea to set a drive on a piece of foam except for very short term testing. The chips are on the bottom and need air circulating around them for cooling. There are 5"to3.5" adapter brackets out there that effect a rubber shock mounting (see MegaHaus or Dirt Cheap Drives and others) or you could rig your own with a bottom mount adapter and some rubber washers or grommets.

The question that needs to be asked here then is : What is the quietest hard drive in the market ..

At what rpm? of course a 4500 rpm drive will be the most quiet, I can't hear mine ;)

Guess I should have mentioned that I'm using foam that has pyramid shaped peaks and valleys on the side facing the drive. I too was worried about the heat. It was just an experiment at first, to see if that would quiet things down. Kind of forgot about it since. Been over a year now. Maybe I'll suspend it by some springs or something later. But the foam has to stay in the bottom of that bay to effectively cut the whine.

I swore I'd never buy Maxtor again after that. But I couldn't resist the 40GB drive with free ATA100 controller offer. That drive is pretty quiet, so things do change over time. But I'm pretty sure I won't buy WD again. The Caviar fiasco really turned me off. I'd rather not reward them with more of my business after that.

I have one of those 15g/7200 Maxtors and it has been very quiet since the first day I got it. Yours is probably bad or will go bad soon. You might want to consider RMA'ing it and telling Maxtor that the HD makes clicking noises sometimes.
