count yerself lucky it failed today and not during a weekend...having to come in from home during weekend would suck.

hah.. our main fileserver's mobo is on it's way out... it hardlocked last night.. I had to come in at 11pm and reboot it so production could continue building boards... HP has a replacement due tommorow though
 
Awesome trick! Curious, though .. the anti-static bags are semi-metallic (to allow passage of electrons) .. are they insulative enough that they can contact the drive's electronics while it is powered, or did you slip a piece of paper or something in there to prevent that?

I did something very similar with a clients laptop drive that had similar problems. used a ziplock bag filled with ice to keep it cool. Worked long enough to backup. Good job!

I had a HD fail. Many people on ATOT said I was an idiot for freezing it to try and get it to work. I left it in the freezer for a few days and, surprise surprise, it worked.

It would only work in 15 min intervals, so I had to do much re-freezing

when a drive is knocking this works about 75% of the time. normally I only need to pull a couple files off... so 10 min or so until it thaws is fine.. I REALLY wanted an image of this one... it's actually STILL going. drive image says it's at 4 hours and 21 minutes.. lol. it's only 3 gigs. At least it's still transferring though

There are two rules to anything IT related:

1) temporary solutions WILL become permanent. Assume this with almost everything you do
2) if it's not broken, DO NOT try to change settings to fix/make it faster.
