What a good nature day trip from west of NYC?

Zeze

Lifer
1. Bro & GF coming to visit me in NYC
2. They want to do outdoorsy/nature stuff instead of the city
3. We have a car

What else besides Poconos? Any cutesy towns or things to do, 30-90 min drive from where we are?

West of NYC only. No Long Island.

Why West? North of NYC would be a better option, no? A lot of Hiking, small towns, outlets along the hudson river. Two weekends ago, went to Bear mountain for a hike and went to the outlet afterwards.

What's in north of NYC? I may go up afterall (i just hate paying tolls & city traffic).

West or north would each have their charms. Head north along the Hudson on 9 or 9W towards Bear Mountain. It's gorgeous up that way, and the drive along the river is nice too.

Or head West to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, check that out, then maybe drive north along the Delaware river to High Point.

Shore - by Spring Lake (free of the frat crowd). I havent been there since Sandy though. Heard it was hit HARD.

Bushkill Falls might be worth checking out. I used to go there all the time when I was younger, and just went again last year with my girlfriend (she lives near you, ZeZe, IIRC).

90 min drive from NYC can get you to a lot of state parks/hiking trails in south-west CT or eastern NY by the hudson. I would think that's a better direction to take than heading west, but I could be wrong...

Bear mountain is a lot of fun. Good two hour hike or so up, great views of hudson river valley

Yeah. The larger Harriman State Park (adjacent to Bear Mountain) is beautiful this time of year and fall also. Bear Mountain is well more known, but there are plenty of lakes and trails in Harriman.

I'm in Pomona about 10 minutes from it.

Tagging this post for myself. I'm always looking for places to go around nyc

If you like hiking or camping, I've been to Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Taconic State Park, and Brendan T. Byrne State Forest (NJ) in the past 3 years, all within 2 hours or so of NYC. All great parks to enjoy nature or go camping. Harriman and Bear Mountain are some of the closest to the city (45 minutes north) and pretty nice, though there are plenty of people visiting Bear Mountain at the height of summer.

It's best in fall, the leave are changing and they have a huge oktoberfest there, so you hike for a bit and then go have a shit ton of beer and brats. Did it both years I was in the city, I highly recommend it. You can take a river boat up there from west side manhattan, but it only gives you like 2 hours at oktoberfest, so I recommend driving if you can.

Yup, held at less than a mile from where I live, lol. Walking distance.

Wasted on me this year since I'm a vegan as of November and I don't drink beer. 😀
If I smelled the brats though I'd be damn tempted...
