The best thing to do is pick some of them, and then leave them standing upright in the open air. Put them in a vase or something similar. I am surprised you have not seen a similar situation in other people's house.

You will know when they are ripe because their skin changes color to that corn yellow color.

AKA Cattails... Common in North America and Horseshoe Lake has them but I wouldn't eat them due to the lake being polluted.
