What a Crime!!! Teachers should get paid more money!!!!

I was just doing a little research on teachers salaries in the state of NJ, and it's a crime!!! The average salary for a NJ regular education teacher is $45,000-60,000 a year!! For special education teachers the salary increases $5,000-10,000 so your looking at $55,000-65,000 a year. Teacher salaries in other states are actually much worse. But my big gripe is teachers have the most important job in today's society, but yet they get treated very badly. Because teachers are underpaid, the state of NJ and many other states are having a hard time filling classrooms with adequate and professional instructors!!

I'll be graduating next year with my bachelors degree in the field of special education. My starting salary will most likely be $34,000 a year with paid benefits. In my opinion. begining teachers should start out at 60,000 a year. What the hell is 60,000 a year now a days??? Oh well, at least I can tutor on the internet and make 20 bucks an hour!!!!

And please don't take this rant to negatively, I just believe that teachers shoud be paid accordingly. 🙂

You get insane benefits and only have a 180 day schedule. You work half the year, you have EVERY WEEKEND and EVERY HOLIDAY OFF. Get over it. My brother teaches in the Los Angeles. He used to complain, now he realizes it's a fairly good job.

The only way you'll make a significant amount more is if you're an Administrator or Dept Head.

You also make more depending on your education and age. I had a math teacher who had a masters and she was about 40 years old and pulling in about $60,000 a year.

That was $60,000 a year and she got summers off and all the other benefits teachers get. I think it was a pretty nice job, myself. She was a nice and good teacher, too. I had also found that when I went to high school, the teachers who were actually good teachers and weren't total asses got a better response from the students.

Unless you've:

1. Got a masters
2. Nationally board certfied
3. Live in a very affluent area

then not too many teachers are being paid 60K/year. I wish they were, 50-60K would be about what I consider a good compensation level for teachers.

Teachers are paid based on supply and demand. I think they are well paid for what they do and the hours they need to work.

No single sector is more important in society than another; they are all needed.

Answer me this: Why should your starting pay be $60k/year when you're willing to work for $34k? If it's not enough get a different profession. Nobody is forcing you or anybody else to be a teacher. More teachers may be needed across the country but raising the salaries of current teachers is probably not necessary until they start quiting in droves. Open up more jobs but what's the point in increasing their salaries? You get $34k year....well plenty of people with more education can't even get that. A start police officer in many states makes probably in that vicinity. You really think you deserve $60k?!

Hamburgerpimp forgot one thing. The average teacher has 6 hours per day of required work compared to the nearly 8 hours typical for other jobs. Sure they can spend lots more hours grading papers and preparing new coursework if they choose (but sadly many don't choose to do that).

Average teacher: Works 180 days/year. Works 6 hours/day. Earns $45k-$60k.

Average other worker: Works 250 days/year. Works 7.5 hours/day. Earns $40k.

Sure their work is very important. However there are far too many people who want to be teachers. Supply and demand hurts you. As soon as there is a major teacher shortage then you will see salaries rise. We will me in a major teacher shortage soon, I think.

The problem is that people expect their kids to get top quality educations in the public school system, but they're not willing to pay for it in taxes. And no politicians have the ba!!s to tell their constituents that good education isn't cheap. Many European countries have great education systems, but they also have 50%+ income taxes. It's a trade off.

That's not...quite...true. There are certain full days, minimum days, or late start days where students get some time off, but the teachers still need to attend those...boring...*yawn!* conferences.

The single biggest problem is teachers are needed in the Sh1tty Districts and the better Districts are never hiring. Because, the current teachers like it there. Supply and Demand.

Again, you work 1/2 the year and have some of the best benefits available. My brother gets his 401K matched 100%. Not many companies are gonna do that!!

There are only a handful of days teachers have to be there when the kids are not. ANY day outside of your contract you work is extra pay.

After working for an elementary school for 2 years now. I have realize that teachers should deserve more. It's true that they work 180 days a year.. but they sometime work 10+ hours a day or more. I have seen teachers that worked 9 hours at school.. and then go home and work more.. i.e. grading, preparing for tomorrow's lesson...etc. Anyhow this is an email that I have received a while ago..

TIRED OF THOSE HIGH PAID TEACHERS!

I, for one, am sick and tired of those high paid teachers. Their hefty
salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work nine or ten months a year!
It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do,
baby-sit! We can get that for less than minimum wage. That's right.... I
would give them $3.00 dollars an hour and only the for the hours they
worked,
not any of that silly planning time. That would be $15 dollars a day. Each
parent should pay $15 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.
Now, how many do they teach in a day....maybe 25? Then that's $15 x 25 =
$375 a day. But remember they only work for 180 days a year! I'm not going
to pay them for any vacations.
Let's see..... that's $375 x 180 = $67,5000 (Hold on, my calculator must
need batteries!) What about those special teachers or the ones with masters
degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage just to be fair. Let's round
it off to $6.00 an hour. That would be $6 x 5 hours x 25 children x 180
days = $135,000.00 per year.
Wait a minute, there is something wrong here!!!

You need to have a family member who is a teacher to understand all that they do. They work far more than 6 hours a day. Most are required to develop coursework and curriculum, and then you have parent teacher meetings, etc.

I fail to understand why so many people think they "deserve more" for working in their CHOSEN profession. If you are complaining about your wages get a new job. Until you're being forced into a profession don't start bickering when you're not getting enough pay. Get a new job or a new profession.

Maybe $40k doesn't seem much for a teacher...well it is because plenty of people are willing to do it. Supply & demand. Very simple.

There are so many times during the day where you can grade papers, etc. Good teachers always make time. You DO NOT have to spend time outside of Class. Some choose to. Hell, my brother had nearly 300 students in his 3rd year and he did it! And he had the HIGHEST SAT-9 scores out of the entire school. You choose to be a good teacher.

Want more salary as a teacher? Get rid of the damn union and collective bargaining. The NEA is what holds salaries down for many good, hard working, dedicated teachers by eliminating merit pay and protecting lazy, incompetent teachers.

I honestly believe that eliminating the NEA and its various iterations across the country is the best thing we could do to improve education in this country.

Why do people complain about teacher salaries? Yes, their job is important but then again, aren't everyone's jobs important as well? That means we should pay bus drivers and trash collectors 50-60k a year based on the importance of their job. Teachers get GREAT benefits. The cost of benefits is insane for any business. Plus, like what everyone said ... you get the summer off. If they were to get paid the same amount for working year-round, their current average salary would be fairly competitive in today's work force.

BTW, not all teachers make 60k. They start off around 35-40k in CA but that all depends on your experience and education.

Maybe I'm wrong, but most public schools are underfunded, my old school had to use "tree hugger" papers to save money, and it breaks after like 1 period. Let say all the teachers get their raise, where are they gonna chop to be able to give extra salaries. Perhaps the teachers gets better lifestyle, but they have the most important job because of students, the students will be compromised.

But my big gripe is teachers have the most important job in today's society, but yet they get treated very badly.

I agree, it's a shame. I think a teaching degree should be really hard to get, yet pay extremely well. That way only highly motivated and smart people would become teachers. This may be a problem in that it would cause an even greater teacher shortage, yet there are a lot of doctor's around and that is one of the hardest degrees to get.

Most arent worth what they get now (Ill minor in Education in case I cant get a real job ( Read I am worthless and I know it)) but a good teacher is worth considerably more. I passed up a AP position at the College I graduated from because I could make a lot more fixing computers, a JOB that didnt even need a degree.

As long as we have the insanity of Rap "Stars" and Sports "Stars" and "Entertainers" and "Actors" making what they do and PHD Researchers and Doctors and really productive people making the little that they do, this is not going to change.

My wife teaches German in high school. Their school hours are from 7 am to 1 pm. That is 6 hours. Now remember that many teachers don't teach every single class period (except elementary school teachers). That reduces her workday to 5 hours of class. I'll add an hour for other tasks: net 6 hours. I see the vast majority of teachers using the same coursework and curriculum year after year. Thus they don't spend any time creating new ones. The vast majority of teachers I've had in school or personally know either don't grade homework or have the kids grade them in class. Thus they don't spend extra time with that either. Parent teacher meetings are twice a year (two days a piece) so I'll up that to 184 work days. There are a few extra days that are also required - I'll round up to 190 workdays. Still that is far from the 250 workdays for the rest of us.

That's funny and true. Many people go to education because they can't get a job. A good friend of mine just did an IT degree and a bunch of people from his class can't get work and are probably going to get their education degrees.

Sorry, but $45K + to work 10 months is pretty well in keeping with what everybody else gets.
And as far as putting in extra time, I'd hazard that anyone who loves their work spends extra time doing it. I work at least 9 hours a day, usually 10 or 11, and then when I go home, I periodically login and do even more work.
Maybe I just have a good work ethic?
Or maybe I have to makeup for all the time I waste on ATOT 🙂
