What .40 S&W Semiauto do I want?

I was set on getting a .40 S&W Glock, but my brother kind of ruined that by getting one for himself. I don't want to get the same one because when we go to the range it would be nice to have some different handguns to shoot instead of two of the same. I am thinking about thing .40 Springfield Armory XD but I have never fired it and not totally sure.
Are there any other .40 S&W semiautos to consider? I would like to keep it in the same price range of a Glock, which I think is something like ~$500.

Sigs are my favorite followed by Glocks. The XD is pretty nice though.

I prefer 357sig or 40sw in a Sig 226 or 228 frame, Glock in 9mm, and for a .45 auto a SA Micro Compact

If you gotta go with 40S&W, CZ and Sig-Sauer make some nice guns. CZ gives you particularly good bang-for-the-buck.

You go also get a 1911 based .40 which would be sweet. Para makes one.

Or, you could one-up him and get a Glock 22C ;).

I am pretty set on getting .40S&W. Just seems to be about the optimal for my needs and desires. It does seem as if the Sig P229 has some good reviews, the P229R DAK in particular, but also looks like they run a few hundred dollars more.

I say you should try the Para Ordnance LDA, which has the nicest trigger around IMO (though it's a little more money than a Glock). They function essentially like a Glock, but with a much nicer feel (and I am a Glock owner). Also, take a look at the Sig Pro 2340, a very nice pistol for the money. The XD is also great, great value for money, although they're not the prettiest guns in the world.

BTW, although I know you've decided on .40 S&W, I personally think .45 ACP offers essentially the same benefits, and the ammo is somewhat more widely available. The sole advantage of .40 is that its necked cartridges theoretically feed better, but a quality .45 will never let you down. IMO there is really no material reason to buy anything other than the standard-bearer 9mm and .45 ACP autopistol calibers.

I saw on the link to the Kimber, it said "full auto" for that gun. What's with that?

No, not unless you have a Class III license (IIRC). You can't legally buy or sell full auto weapons of any kind in many states though and they are extremely cost prohibitive as are the licensing fees in the states you can.

The 229 SIG is worthy. (Any SIG is, of course....) But I do agree with DonVito on the .45 for availability and choices in ammo, even if you reload your own. I have a P12 ParaOrdnance .45 that has over 10,000 rounds through it and it's just now getting broken in :D I might get one misfeed out of 200 or better....

I have a Sig 239 .40 and I really like it. The only problem is that it's about $200 more than a Glock. The clip only holds 7 rounds and extra clips seem to run close to $40. I bought my Sig slightly used for $550.

I'm thinking about getting a Glock 17 because 9mm ammo is cheaper than .40, and my girlfriend will probably be able to handle the recoil better than the small .40 I have now.

I may reconsider about getitng a .45 ACP and check out those Para Ordnance pistols. In regards to the Sig 239 I would want something more along the lines of a compact and not a subcompact. In fact I may go for a full size as this is not for a carry and conceal but just to take to the range and practice. I may see if I can hit a store and handle the Sig P226 and the Sig Pro 2340.

Too many choices . . .

H&K USP Compact is a beautiful weapon, very reliable. The Sig's are great too. Although both are a bit more pricey than the Glock.
