AFAIK all the 17"'s worth looking at are 1280X1024. You can always run large fonts if you have trouble seeing it... but it's so crisp, sharp, and bright I don't think you will have a problem.

LCD's use a matrix of cells. The pixel pitch and the resolution define the size of the panel. 1024 x 768 are 15-in, 1280 x 1024 are 17-in. A panel that supported 1024 x 768 on a 17-in panel would have a pixel pitch of 0.32, far to large to display a sharp image.

Hey thanks JIM,

But the probelm I have with 17's is the aspect ratio of 5 to 4 which is not "normal" like 4 to 3 which every OS is designed for. So you get the windows and text looking squished along the x axis.

Sure you can run it a 1024X768 but then you lower picture quality becasue of interpolation? Is that right? Also the 19's are also 5 to 4 so no good either IMO.

Carb,

You've got it wrong... 1280X1024 looks squashed when it's displayed on a CRT because the CRT itself is in the 4:3 aspect ratio. An LCD panel that is running 1280X1024 is a native 5:4 display so everything will show up correctly. There are also higher end 1280X1024 CRT's that have the ability to display non native resolutions in their correct 4:3 aspect (black bars at the top and bottom).
