I think it looks pretty good. The book was enjoyable. Creighton's cookie-cutter books read like movies, but the result on film usually leaves a bad taste.

I'm reading the book right now and it's a classic Crichton twinkie novel. It's pretty good, though somewhat mindless, entertainment. Hopefully the movie will be pretty good too.

Edit:

I have to admit, they butchered Congo and Sphere. Hopefully this doesn't turn out quite the same way.

When will the movie be released? The book was interesting, though I wouldn't call it my favorite Crichton book. It does deserve a sequel more than some of the others.

I liked the book which I read right about when it came out. Yah, this movie does seem like it may be kind of stupid. Like a slightly more plausible version of Black Night.

They completely butchered Sphere, which I maintain as the best Critchton novel.

I really enjoyed the book.

Hopefully they won't butcher the story when they make the film.

Really loved the unabridged book on tape! :p

But Paul Walker is a $hitty actor and the prof is not his Dad.

I want to see this movie! :D

It will not be able to beat Master and commander though!

I hear Richard Donner cut out explaining how the time machine worked because it would be too complicated for the viewer and he wanted more action instead. When I heard this I knew the movie was as good as ruined. Shoulda got Spielberg. Explaining how they got time travel to work was the most interesting part...not too mention how the travelers weren't actually themselves anymore.

Did you ever play the old PC game? They actually maintain that a VIDEO TAPE survived all that time, when according to the novel, it was even a chore to extract text from parchment that old. That's right. Magnetic tape... OF ALL THINGS! They obviously only did that so they could have a cinema scene with the professor begging for help while something extremely violent and action-packed goes on in the background.

I just got the book today at costco for $8. so far, so good. I'll finish reading it and then think about checking out the movie. it might at least be netflix worthy.

When I read that book I thought "this is a screenplay, not a novel". I was blown away when I read Jurrasic Park in 93' (before it became a movie) and went and read everything he had written and everything was good. None of the movies ever did the novels justice (except maybe Rising Sun and Disclosure). I thought Timeline (the book) was horrible and by far the worst thing he has written. In the past most of his novels were based on scientific concepts that held some validity or just crime/suspense stuff, but time travel in one of his novels just seems too Hollywood. The movie actually looks pretty good from the trailers. After reading Timeline I was reluctant to buy his next work "Prey". Luckily I did and found it much more to my tastes.

Jurassic park was a great movie, but the book itself was leaps and bounds better. Sphere was awful as a film, I did not read the book, though.

Paul Walker is arguably a worse actor than Keanu Reeves, the choice of putting him in a leading role gives away exactly who the producers are planning to cater to: the Fast and the Furious crowd. Forget a compelling plot or interesting scientific explanations. This film is going to be about explosions and swordfights. I will be happy if my hunch turns out to be false, though.
