No, not the support device to aid in walking...

I get in to work today to hear this (We've got a Walker!) from a co-worker. It seems in my new prairie-cube environment (low cube walls), I have a new resident in the cube diagonally from me. It seems this new person (who is in IT too) is a fan of the blue-tooth phone headsets and likes to walk around while having phone conversations or meetings.

I don't bemoan the loss of an office. I went from a windowed executive office before the acquisition to a windowless office after. The new space is airy and I have a long row of windows to look outside. Also I get to hear other managers bitch about the new work environment but are powerless to do anything about it. If I would bitch, it would be about the loss of my whiteboard where I kept a lot of my ideas/work/plans because my brain is too small to hold all that in.

However it has only been half a day and the new person has been on the phone the whole time. And this person paces...and paces. She hasn't walked behind me because her desk is on the opposite side but I do face her when I'm typing and looking at my monitors.

The coworker at the end of her row and closest to the window is starting to make growling noises as the new person seems to like hanging out by the windows while talking (oh did I mention the pacing?)

I wonder if the irritation from the others is coming from the walking and talking or that this person is the most junior of all of us? (This person's boss by the way is a remote manager.) Maybe a lunch break will reveal all.

Yup we are getting moved to no cubicles. Well, more like desks next to each other. Something like you describe. Also, meeting rooms made of glass, yeah it's going to be great looking like hamsters in there.

Edit: Right after I posted this a team member walked over to my cube and gave me a brand new wireless headset. Omg noooo!

When I worked in a cube farm (shudder) I was on the phone all the time, and I preferred to stand and pace. I still do in my home office. I dunno why.

I never understood the open office plan. It really does not make sense to me.
Sounds like it's above your paygrade then....

In some cases it's supposed to encourage more face to face communication among folks.

What it's really about is the ability for management to stroll around and see what employees are doing without having to open doors or knock.

If I'm on the phone for more than 5 minutes I start walking. I don't even realize I'm doing it until I have to look something up on my computer and it's not in front of me.

That, or else implemented by hardcore extroverts, who believe that anyone who prefers to spend time alone is either severely mentally ill and will eventually be cured of it, or should be shot and incinerated before they spread the infection to the rest of the happy, intermingling population.

when I went into an office we were basically sitting 5 ft from the next person and can hear everything they say on the phone. Even with tall dividers we could hear the person on the other side. I'm more of a private person and naturally speak low so every time I was on the phone I'd be conscious of my conversations, which was very annoying to have to do. Now I'm home and my only noise complaint is all the landscapers (everyone seems to have one but me).

As for the whiteboards... they sell plenty at Target. I only have a 3x2 but that's because my desk is next to a window so not a lot of wall space. I didn't want to have to walk far for it. Would've loved a bigger one.
