Western Digital WD800JBRTL reliability??

HI All

Ive read some good reviews about performance of this drive. I've also read some horrible
reviews about the reliability of the 80gig 8meg cache drives. WD recently reduced the warranty down to 1 year on these drives. Anyone purchase one of these drives with the one year warranty and are happy? Im only interested in the people who have bought pretty recently. I figure the latest drives might be from a better batch. Also, do these new ones have fluid bearings? If so, what is the noise level like?

In case you were not aware, just about all consumer-level hard drives are now sold with a 1 year warranty, not just "these drives". So I hope you are not using that as a basis of reliability of the particular drive... I have found all my Western Digital drives reliable. But then I can also say the same for all my maxtor drives and the few Seagate drives I've owned.

I've got one as my os drive in my main computer. It definitely gets the crap beat out of it on a daily basis.

I have 7 western digital drives, 1 maxtor and a couple of quantums. I like western digital above most though. They've been really solid for me, and I'm a heavy computer user.

I had 1. 120 gig HD 8mb that i had for like 3 months ago it just died..... clicking noises... and i also have a 80 gig hd 8mb thats still going strong. im currently rma the 120 gig HD i think it sucks im gonna get a used one back.

In my opinion Seagate are the best in all areas for hard drives except those WD Raptors.

Speaking only for the newer 8mb cache drives from Maxtor, Seagate and WD over the past year. I have 1 (out of about 10) WD drives go bad, the same for Maxtor and 0 bad Seagates. It is a small sampling for each but after a while I do notice that the WD's do get louder as they "wear in". They do not have fluid bearings and are louder and hotter that either the Seagate or Maxtor. The Seagates are by far the quietest.

For the retail price that you can get the WD 80's (Officemax has the for +/- $20 this week) the cost/performance/failure ratio is outstanding.

why do you think you will get a used one back? I had my WD800JB get noisey on me, called WD and they sent me a new drive as far as I can tell.

I just got mine in december 03. Everything is working fine. Usually with WD, if it works for the first week, then you are set for life
