Here

I know its a better deal than it was a few weeks ago, but isn't this a relatively new drive? If i'm building a comp in the next 2-3 months, do you think this will drop some in price, or should I jump on this 'deal' right now?

Thanks for input.

i need to order a hd and also am torn between this and the samsung f1 750gb.

there is a direct comparison review at anandtech and they are both neck and neck.

samsung has better value and more cache but WD has better conceived quality

either drive will be a great deal.

But I think these prices are normal and I am a bargain hunter :p I guess I'll wait for now.

I hear ya....im building my comp by simply waiting for the part that I want to go on a good sale, then I grab it. Already got my PSU, case, and ram this way. Great deals for all.
No rush for me since I'm not playing anything right now....but I already got preorder of CE Warhammer online....so I got several months before thats out.

if you can wait, then wait, the price will always go down as these prices are not sale prices. but the performance on these seem to be top notch for its price.

Samsung is better if you dont have an NFORCE mobo. If you do then you need to turn off NCQ and dont install the NVIDIA IDE driver software. USE the Microsoft drivers.

I went with the Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640gb drive because I dont want to deal with a compatibility issue down the line. I am very happy with the drive. Its FAST.

The Samsung and WD should outperform this slightly due to higher density platters, and yes they ALL have perpendicular technology these days. ;)

Yeah, prices are normal. Do you need the extra 100GB? Price difference (Samsung 750GB from ZZF or somewhere else cheaper than Newegg) is around $5. Performance will be very close.

I agree with davidtb at this time. If you are buying it now,
then get the 500GB unit he linked to. It seems like an
excellent deal. Or just wait until you are ready to build.
New stuff comes out all the time and prices / sales are always
changing. In 2-3 months, you can probably get a better deal
or maybe even a rebate on something. I would wait for now.
And personally, I like my drives to be as close to even increments
of 100GB as possible .. 640GB is a bit odd in my view. 100 / 250 / 500 /
750 / 1000Gb

performance is almost the same between the wd640 and f1 but I think the WD runs cooler and quieter.

Anyone know how noise and temperature / heat production are compared to say the 750 GB Western Digital Green Power (5400 rpm) hard drive?

Didn't know that, thanks. What nVidia SATA-IDE driver version are you using with your WD 640GB?

I had posted this elsewhere.... but I'm running the Samsung F1 750GB on an Nforce4 without a single issue - both with the built-in XP Pro SP2/3 drivers and with the nForce 4 package installed. So I was surprised to hear about there being incompatibilites. I even went briefly searching but couldn't find an official statement or much detailed info.

The 32MB of cache also makes a tangible difference in general computing and especially multitasking, something benches won't show. The drive is fast, cool, and very quiet even during seeks. I'd say either drive is worth owning, the Western Digital WD6400AAKS or the Samsung Spinpoint HD753LJ.

I would disagree, i think the faster and cheaper per gig WD is a better deal.

Dont know why you want increments of 100 considering its not what you really get anyways. Like 500gig you get like 488GB. So really the 620 would give you closer to the 100 increment mark. 605GB.

The "Green" drive should be quieter, run cooler, produce less heat and draw less power. Of course it also performs less. Whether you notice the noise/temp difference will depend on your case and your ears.

I just ordered this from Chiefvalue (for $4 more, of course, including CA tax) and I'm sticking it in a nice MacAlly enclosure.

Anyone know the best place to get a [cheap] eSATA bracket? The enclosure unfortunately doesn't come with one, and it seems dumb to buy one for $4 from Newegg and then pay $6 to ship it. I checked Frys, and no go there.

Just to stay on topic: I saw a sound review (which I remembered the link) and the GP was pretty much inaudible compared to a normal running computer. The F1 was a little louder, but they both performed well. I think something like 22 to 25 dbs or something.

this has already been hashed out before here......
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...ey=y&keyword1=WD+640GB

The WD 640 is the best HDD I have ever owned, and since I am sensitive to noise, I would even take it over the raptors, and perhaps the new (much more expensive) velociraptor, tho I have never heard one running in person

I dont know if Samsung has corrected its qual control issues - and I am not going to buy one to find out

Thanks for the link. I'm sorta pissed I can't find one local. Even at Fry's. I may go get one on Amazon, since my mom has the free shipping thingee. But sheesh...how hard should it be to get one of these for under $10?!

Anyone else have any ideas?

(And mine is due to be shipped today. Can't wait!)

I really like dealing with these people, so if they have something comparable in price, I use them
Very friendly and helpful lady on the phone line
Be warned, they do not email order notice - only ship notice

nice, I really dont have the money to spend though. I had the 'i hate newegg phase' but then they really took care of me on a few orders. I just really dont like restocking fees...
