I use the WD800JB. Very quiet so far, can only hear faint seek noise and only the idle noise if I practically stick my head inside the case.

My WD800JB (retail) is the most quiet drive I've had to date and I've had several over the course of the last 6 years.

I have a WD1200JB and have not noticed any whine with my case open. With the case closed I can't hear any drive noise over the 12 fans that are running...:D

I have 2 80GB JB's and a 120GB JB. All three of my drives are as quiet as any harddrive I've heard. A computer my friend built had 2 80GB JB's, and they sounded horrible. He didn't really notice the sound, but compared to mine the drives sounded faulty. The pc was built mid-summer and is still running fine though.

Like this user, I have the same drive. The WD drive is very quiet - quieter than my old IBM 60 GB drive which was quiet compared to some of the older drives that I've owned in the past.

Hopefully, this whine doesn't point out any potential problems with these drives. After all of the IBM Deskstar issues that I've read about, I'd hate to see similar problems surface with the WD "SE" line of drives.

80GB SE here... totally quiet. I can't hear it unless it is reading/writing, and I have to really listen for it, and be in a quiet room.

My case has an Antec dual fan PS, 3 Panaflo's, and the retail P4 heatink/fan. I recently added a WD200BB drive for Redhat 8.0 and that is quiet as well.

I haven't a clue, my case fans would probably drown out anything.
I don't think it is loud though.
