I think I'll be the lab rat :)

I would think with the hitachi sataII drives showing comparable performance to the Raptors (not in every situation) and WD has always been reliable for me and they do cross ship replacements... f it, I'm snagging the 160GB

/me changes name to pappa_lab_rat

do you have to have a MB that supports SATAII? Are these that fast or are the ones with the 16mb cache the best option? Better than RAPTOR?

Almost as better, almost is the keyword.

The 160GB Hitachi Drive is almost identical to the WD 160GB Drive... the cross ship and WD's reliability makes me want to go with the WD. but without knowing the performance comparison.... As far as the Raptor, the review link I post above shows the Hitachi and Raptor are pretty comparable. If there was a sizeable difference in performance, I could understand spending ~$75 more for the 72GB Raptor but for 50% less space and 50% more price with a 5-10% performance variance (give or take based on reviews)... these SATA II drives would be a more viable option right? Also, something else to think about. Wouldn't WD put out a drive that would have less performance over the Raptor to retain the sales of the Raptors?

I guess it's just too early to tell. If they compete with Hitachi, they'll loose with the Raptor sales. But if they don't compete with the Hitachi and other SATA II drives, they will not have a competitive drive performance.

I'm looking to deep into it huh? :p

:)
Not much room to brag about in this review...:D:D:D
...except to say, "One rabbit crossed the finish line just barely in front of the other."

Not exactly "Cheetahs", either one ? but SATA is nice.

Has anyone seen the WD 16mb cache drives available anywhere? I've been looking but I can only find reviews on them.

I can't remember where the review was but I believe a 16mb cache Maxtor SATAI performed better than the Hitachi 8mb cache, SATAII in most tests but the SATAII won a few. I think if you used them in a RAID is where you'll see them due better.
