Western Digital RMA process is so much easier than Seagates

Oh seagate, I love your drives, but why do you make the RMA process so hard? Even checking the warranty status is a paint with that stupid ass word confirmation crap that takes me 5 refreshes until I see something I can actually type.

Western Digital on the other hand, lets me check all my drives at once and even has an advance RMA program.

EDIT: WD even has a UPS option for cheap shipping. Last time it only cost me 4 bucks for a UPS shipment.
 
WD6400AAKS, VelociRaptor, and their new Caviar Black drives. What's not to like about WD right now?

I stopped being a diehard Seagate fan after I bought some 7200.9s. WD all the way now.
 
Seagate does offer a $19.99 advanced replacement and you then have 25 days to return the defective drive.

The word jumble does suck though.
 
Seagate would reply that their hard drives don't really go bad during the warranty period, that's why they don't have such a thawed out.
 
I didn't know Seagate's RMA was so hard. Fill out form, put in box, wait. Don't have to run any utilities or prove problems with the drive. Guess I don't see the problem.

Lot of WD fans lately. Might have to try out their drives again. They used to be so much louder than other manufacturers.
 
WD may have an easy RMA process but when you have a Raptor that has a 5 yr warranty and is less than 1 yr old and you have to return it, the refurbished replacement has something like a 30/90 day warranty. Real nice, WD. :roll:


No idea about seagate. Never had to deal with RMA.

You are kidding right? I am about to buy a Velociraptor soon, and I hear they have huge failure rates.
 
I've got a WD 500GB waiting for me on my doorstep right now. 🙂 Can't wait to install Windows 7 on it!

That's the way it was ~1 yr ago so unless they have changed policy then it is exactly that way.


I don't know anything about Velociraptors but I don't believe i'd buy anything that had a high failure rate. 😕
 
Always go with WD. They have the best drives imo in the first place, and when they do die they replace em with no questions.

Running a 74g raptor that is like 3-4 years old no problems....

:shocked: Knock on wood, running a 300GB VelociRaptor since August, and a 150GB Raptor in my dad's fileserver for a few years now.

*fires up Acronis and starts a backup*
 
Western Digital does advanced RMAs in Canada.

Seagate doesn't and they force you to buy a $20 box (plus $6 shipping for the box) to RMA a drive to them. You have to pay for the shipping the box and the drive to them as well of course.
 
Not sure if it was coincidence but I had 3 drives in a raid 5 of different manufacturers (yeah I know, bad idea, but was using existing and going el chepo). The seagate was the slowest, while the samsung was the fastest, and hitachi was middle. The samsung was twice the price of the seagate while the samsung was in middle. Seagate does seem to make the cheapest drives so guess you get what you pay for. Don't get me wrong they're still good drives but I would not use them in a raid5 again.

I can count my drive failures on a single hand and I don't recall how many were seagates but I don't remember it being that hard. Then again I would just order a brand new drive off tigerdirect then do the RMA process to get a replacement, and I'd just use the, now spare, for something else. So the wait was non issue. (couple weeks)

Also, $4 shipping?! wow. Here it's more like 15-20.

15-20 through the UPS link as you go through the WD rma process? Maybe its because you're in canada. Are you shipping it to California?

I used to be a big fan of seagates, with their 5 year warranties, but now, I'm a wd fan as well, although I've been rocking some samsung 1tb drives as storage. 5400rpm means low noise and power.

TwiceOver: It is a hassle because they only let you do 1 drive at a time, and you have to enter the serial number and model/part number, then that stupid scrambled word.

On WD, you just enter serial numbers separated by commas and off you go.

EDIT: 19.99 for the advance replacement sucks when WD offers it for free. They just hold a cc on file if you don't return a drive.
