I wonder if they short-stroked it? By this I mean if they used only part of the platters so that the heads never have to move across the whole platter.

A good bit cheaper in $/GB than a Velociraptor and much much cheaper than SSD (especially the ones not suffering from JMicron controller problems).

EDIT: They should have tested against a Velociraptor or at the least a WD6400AAKS so we could see exactly how good this new drive stacks up against some known drives.

look here the new western digital is not in there but the other drives you mention are in there. just open both reviews and compare the numbers

I have a 750gb RE2 and I am surprised how fast that drive is. It's one of the fastest 7200 rpm drives have seen. The RE3 is 15-30% faster.

The review I saw plotted it against a Velociraptor with a RE2, the 1TB black edition drive and about 5 or 6 other SATA drives. It never was too far behind 2nd in any of the tests and for most of them it was right behind the Velociraptor.

The 1TB black edition drive is ever so slightly slower but nearly identical in speeds.

However the RE3 does undergo additional QA (or is supposed to) so it should be extremely reliable.

Just installed a WD6401AALS today and boy, it's faaaast. Faster than the 36GB raptor it replaced and gives me soooo much room. I'm psyched! So glad I got this drive. It's practically silent, too, so I can kiss the crazy grinding of my old raptor goodbye. I got it in 2005 and it was a first gen drive, so it was looooud. I have a second raptor in a seperate machine and it's significantly quieter than the older one. But this WD6401AALS beats both. Very satisfied.

Definatley not the 150gb velociraptor. It might give the 150 standard raptor a run for its money. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at benchmarks on storagereview, but what I saw showed this drive very close and I think beating it in some tests. My belief is that the performance difference is so slight that it would take the most grueling long-term disk job imaginable for anyone like me to notice a difference.

The difference over MY the raptor IS noticable, though. That is likely due to the fact that my raptor was made in 05 and has the first gen circuitry. My newer 36gb raptor (build 07) is much more quiet than the older 36 gb one and a bit faster. I never used the newer model as an OS drive, though.

I think the key thing about these black drives is that they're quite a bit cheaper. Being 7200rpm elminates the dreaded vibration oscillation that can occur with mixed drive setups. They also run cool. Big plusses for standout performance.

Thanks yep but there is one thing 7200 rpm hard drive drives will never have. The low response time of the raptor and velociraptor. So it depends on what your looking for. 12.x ms response time is good but not as good as 7 to 8 ms response time. Then again as always if you want the best solid state hard drives are the way to go with the fastest response time. Though SCSI is still not that bad but nothing compared to the speed of solid state but at least cheaper still than solid state of course.
