Western Digital or Seagate

just bought myself the seagate 350gb. 5 year warranty got me

I think Seagate makes a great drive, they just never made one for me. Okay... 3 out of 6 have actually been good. WD has been decent over the years and I just picked up a 320 SATA with the 16m cache last weekend. I really wasn't expecting much but I like it so far. I didn't run any benchmarks against the 2 year old Samsung it replaced but it is much snapper without a doubt. It's also exceptionally quiet which, in my experience, is unusual for WD drives. FWIW, Speedfan shows it running at 27C with an 80mm front case fan. No matter what my intentions are I never keep a drive for more than 2 years, so for me the 3 yr warranty was fine.

The westerd digital actually runs cooler..this is the one that came out right? As far as drive failure is concerned that can be a factor. I was going to buy a new drive and I was looking at these two also..I decided on the WD b/c of temps. Warranty isn't 5 yrs but 3 yrs is adequate.

What is the current state of the Seagate? They seem rather a gamble at this point.

Of the 14 hard drives I have owned:

2 WD - 1 died in less than 1 year, 1 had "issues" (hard drives should not have "Belt whine" and smell bad)
2 Ibm - Both failed in first month
2 Fujitsu - 1 dead in first year, 1 became very load and hot (discontinued use after that)
8 Seagate - No issues on any, still using one of the first ones I bought 7 years ago, 3 from 4 years ago, sold others due to new systems.

I would recommend Seagate, Speed is nothing if the drive stops spinning.

I also had a Maxtor, but I would rather not discuss that one, it was a painful experience.

Seagate for me! Just got a 320GB .10 and a 400GB .9 for my new setup. The only drive that has failed on me so far has been a Maxtor.

If you are looking for low noise performance, some of the recent Western Digital drives are actually quite good.

A 160 GB PATA Seagate I used to own made this annoying, intermittent diagnostic noise, though it's idle noise was low.

There are WAY too many Seagate fans here. Seriously, it's kinda bad. No one here admitted that 7200.8s sucked until the 7200.9s and 7200.10s rolled around. And when I pointed out reliability SUCKED according to SR data, everyone said it was BS and I was pulling data from polls and it wasn't credible data, etc, etc...

Stop saying WD sucks. I know they did back in the day of theri 120gb drives, but it's been a while, and WD reliability can easily match Seagate reliability today. 7200.8s sucked and I had 2 fail on me, but my 7200.9 has been holding up strong for some time now.

7200.7s were damn reliable, and I would stick with Seagate personally. The 7200.10 blows competition away in performance and what not.

IF you talk about noise and heat, while the 7200.10 is louder and hotter, it's not that much worse. Some 7200.10s are exceptionally loud, but do not use that to generalize the whole line. Read SR Forums nad you will know which ones are the loud ones, and hopefully you won't run into those.

That said I would be happy to have either, but I just bought myself 2x7200.10s.

While I like Seagate and WD, I've always had Maxtor and for the last 12 years I've never had a failure. I always went for price and always got the least expensive I could afford which always was Maxtor. My current drive, a 160gb Maxtor is a few years old and still chugging along. I'm sure at some point I will replace it but not because of failure but because I need more space. I may not stay with the same mfgr when I do replace it but I have no problems going with any of the above products, SG, WD or Maxtor. I will go with the best price/GB's.

Never had a Seagate. WDs, Maxtors & Hitachis were my element.
Mostly Western Digital nowadays.
