Western Digital OR Seagate

Which of these two hard drives (PATA) would you consider more reliable.

I've used WD for most of my computers with few failures but turned to Seagate because of the longer warranty. Now a friend tells me he's read that Seagate's failure rate is high. I Googled to find something but couldn't. Is this bad info?

I'm mostly interested in the 120GB and 160GB.

Seagate is generally considered to be one of the more reliable HDD companies. Personally I find them all to be fairly reliable, but maybe I'm just lucky.

I have more WD drives than Seagate. Never had either company fail on me.

DEFINITELY Seagate. Trust me, I switched from WD to seagate as well, only one simple reason:
WD drive's high frequency noise drives me crazy! Maybe we could setup a class action
to sue them for hearing damage - this is far more serious than a dead drive!
As for those seagate complaints, I don't believe it at all - all my drives are seagate now and never give me a problem for over 1.5 year so far. Those newbies just don't know how to keep the case/drive cool which in turn damaged the seagate they just bought - that is my theory, period.

I have no idea what youre talking about with the "high frequency noise".

I have a number of WD drives, and none of them make the noise.

Before you call me deaf... i can hear the high pitched noise TVs make when they are on and the screen is black.

Neither, buy a Maxtor!

Both are good drives, however from my experince SEAGATE, is alot quiter, and i've used seagate drives for years an years... they are still working fine when i build a new system every 2 to 3 years with no problems, failings, loss of data.

I find seagates run a little hotter than some drives.. but an intake fan at the drive cage takes care of that, and its worth the quite operation they bring to the case.

They are both good, I would just go with seagate for the longer waranty, and they tend to be a little quieter than WD.

Don't the new (circa 2005) Western Digital drives have Whispherquiet technology (fluid dynamic bearings and AAM capability)?

Both WD and Seagate are reliable in my experience, and current drives are quiet since they use FDB (fluid dynamic bearing), as mshan has stated.

I know it's not really all that impressive, but I've got 7 Seagates here, running nearly continuously since January, and they've not given me any headaches, a far cry from a 200GB Maxtor I had. Within a few months, it started showing new bad sectors. I've always had bad sector troubles with Maxtor drives.

I'll post an update in a few years on my Seagate drives, assuming I haven't bought larger ones.

Cool, someone else who can hear that sound.
The high pitched sound from WD drives - yes, some of them do make a high pitched whine, though much lower in frequency than that sound CRT's make. Not all of them do this though.

Umm, are you looking to buy a bunch of bulk Drives for you company or something. It really depends on the model. Yes warranty is longer with Seagate but from performance, thermal, speed (etc.) point of view it really depends on the specific model. Not all WD are better than seagate and not all seagates are better than WD.

Using it for media, as master OS drive, do u have SATA available, also $$$$$??? etc etc etc? Then we can give you a better answer.
