i have used both and overall, i have found my maxtor drives to be faster and with the tweaking utility, you can make them as quiet-conscious or performance-conscious as you want

I've had one Maxtor and three WDs in the last few years and I think I'd pick WD. I haven't had any problems with mine. Although I am considering going with IBM for my next purchase.

i've used both...my maxtor crashed but that's not because it was a "maxtor" drive...but more so on my part that it ended up dying. So i'm using a WD and i have to say, both are good...

Well, normally I would say that Maxtors tend to offer a slightly better performing drive, but you should keep in mind that Maxtor is now shipping Quantum drives in their retail boxes due to their recent acqusition of the aforementioned company. So the Maxtor drives tend to be a lil overpriced IMHO for what you are actually getting.

Personally, I would go with the IBM Deskstar 60GXP's. Reliable, high performance, and extremely quiet.
Just my 2 cents.
