Here's the deal, guy I know has both and will only keep one, which one should I tell him to pick?

I know more questions need to be asked but I'm going to ask the question, based on ease of use + name brand which would you pick? Since he has both currently in possession price isn't a valid point.

My choice would be the Western Digital unit. All the drives I own both internal and external are WDC units. Never had any issues with them. The WD unit you linked to has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 interfaces. Only thing, I would not use the Smart Ware software with the drive, unless the user is a real novice and needs hand holding to move files. I prefer just an external drive with no software of any kind on it.

You haven't realized that those premade units are nothing but trouble?

Buy the HD of your choice and install it into a decent external enclosure.

It's a no-brainer for warranty and troubleshooting.

goflex is junk man. i just bought 4 and they didn't sit well. you would lay them on their side and they'd be fine, but stand them up and after 0-100 minutes they'd disconnect. almost like the drive would heat up and disconnect from the sata connector. got the seagate model that was one piece and works flawless (3tb no less).
