Hey Guys I heard that Western Digital Got a nice enterprise HD but as far as stability, how does western digital stand up against maxtor or seagate ? Which brand of HD would you buy for reliability

If you're looking for reliability I'd look at scsi, they usually have a much higher MTBF than ide.

If I'm buying cheap ide, I buy maxtor. I've had every brand die on me and maxtor has a nice rma procedure.

maxtor fail, i'd think WD fail alot. I built a pc for a lady and WD failed in less than 6 months doing word processing. what did you do for maxtor to always fail and when you say always fial how much fialed on you ?

failures I have dealt with lately (not all my computers):
new maxtor 60, maybe a static event in handling?
another relatively new maxtor 60, failed to ghost properly, got lucky there and recovered data
wd 20 gig, started making really ugly noises
two OEM 40 gig seagates from HP's I hate those drives, each one just out of 1 year warranty
deathstar75 60 gig, improperly packaged, never even spun when i opened it

I have 3 of the 15 gigs , never a bit of trouble, it seems the issue was with the multiplatter ones only. They got too hot.

Seagate as much as possible, all my SCS160 drives are Seagate. I don't like Maxtor at all, I've had several of their drives and they just suck IMO. Of course now I'm comparing them to 15K RPM SCSI160 drives =)

Seagate for me. I've been pretty lucky on hard drives though. I still have a 40gig IBM 75GXP Deskstar going after a couple of years.

I prefer Maxtor out of your list (I've bought a lot, and only two have failed, but again, such statistics are more/less useless).
IBM 120GXP/180GXP are very good IDE disks imho. And consider going SCSI if you store critical data (+ backups, raid1/5 etc..)

Plug for Western Digital Here. Quantum if I could!

Don't care that Maxtor bought out Quantum, they still don't seem to be half as good as Quantum.

Quantum Drives were the best (in My Opinion). I have 4 Maxtors, and 2 have failed with 2 years. I have my first quantum from 1997 (or so) which was one of the first Gig Drives. 1.2 GB baby. And it is still rocking!

Maxtor for me... never had one fail and now I use them in three of my computers including my file/mail/game server on my home LAN.

I've had the exact opposite experience. WD is garbage, Maxtor only from now on.

this discussion is in "operating systems" because.........??????????

(i've had equally average experiences w/ all brands i've had, wd, segate, maxtor, ibm, fujitsu...)

Because GH is usually filled with OS/Net questions 😉

its a crapshoot, they all fail. purely luck if you haven't had one fail yet. (ide that is, scsi is better...but they still go. i've seen 2 cheetahs eat it)

i stick with maxtor because they do advance replacement. when one dies on a monday i have an new one in hand on wednesday.

advance replacement + "no quibble" rma policy + cheap = maxtor good.

I don't have a lot of experience with Seagate or IBM, but just because of IBM's history with the GXP's I'd steer clear of them. I've used Maxtors and WD's, and had good experiences with both... I'd probably lean towards WD, since they've had great support (in my experience). So, that's my 2 cents, FWIW.

In the pat four months, I have had three drives fail. An IBM, a Maxtor, and a Western Digital. Of the three, Maxtor seems to have the fastest RMA policy, six business days. IBM the worst, five weeks.

At work, the failure rate between Maxtor and Western Digital seems to be about the same.

Never had a single HD that broke, but prefer Western Digital (plan to get the Raptor when the price falls some more).
