Howdy folks,

I wish the top of discussion would have been something more pleasant. I woke up a few days ago and attempted to start my desktop up. Everything loaded until it got to the Windows XP scrolling screen . .then it restarted and continued to the same thing over and over. I wasn't too worried and thought it was just a corrupted kernel. I took the hard drive out and plugged it into another desktop in attempt to draw the files as a secondary slave drive. I plugged in the IDE cables and the hard drive did not spin. Now, I am very worried and would appreciate any advice. The hard drive is the 200GB Western Digital IDE HD that was made in 2004. Thanks folks!

You mentioned plugging the drive into the other PC as a slave, that's good. What about the four-pin power connector? (Not trying to be funny, sometimes we skip the most obvious things)

If you got it properly connected and it's not turning on, if it's still under warranty, call Western Digital Support ASAP, they should help you get a replacement drive.

Peace

Oh, i made sure of that. You are right sometimes the answer is right in front of us. . . but, not in this case. I will try to contact support, but my biggest concern is how I can still retrieve the data within the drive. IF anyone any suggestions . . much appreciated.

is it showing up in bois ?

if not the slave jumper pin setting could be wrong
another symptom of an improper jumper is

Hit your pause break key when it's showing your hard drives
look carefully at the name of the master HD
if it is off even by one letter OR has funny charters in it
the jumper pin is wrong

the master should still run even with a wrong jumper setting on the slave
well 85% of the time

Oh ya also check the jumper on the master to make sure it's set right also

Could be the motor controler chip is failing... if you did all the above and still not working...

The freezer trick is putting the HDD into a zip-lock and suck all of the air out. Leave it in for a couple of hours then, quickly remove from bag and install on computer. I've had limited success but, it's worth a try. :)

Ah ok .. .. . well . . Ill give that a try tomorrow morning. If that doesn't budge . . looks like ill have to go with a hard drive recovery service. They look pretty damn pricey . . does anyone have any recommendations?

These drives are likely out of warrenty unless you bought the extended warranty. WD has a deal with Ontrack and they will try to refer you to them for recovery services. But WD will not do that though; they will only give you a replacement drive if the drive is still under warranty...
