Western Digital 2TB Hard Drive now on sale.

Nice post; I think I might bite on one of these when they his ~$180 or so. Probably going to be a while though...

I'll probably pick up a couple once they hit $150 or so... $299 MSRP/$250 street is just too expensive when a 1.5TB Seagate is only $100.

I wouldn't trust the Seagate with anything you want to keep.

Does it come with a extra 2TB drive also? You would almost need one just to backup that thing.

Hopefully, all other drives will now be cheaper. 🙂

I'm planning on four of them. Two to keep mirrored in my PC, one as an external copy to keep in a safe at home, and another external to keep at my parent's.

yea... 2 of those for a mirror array will cost me 500$... my raid6 of 750GB drives gives me 2.25GB total and would sell for under 70$ a drive... so i would recoup under 350$ for current array... 150$ upgrade cost... lower power, slightly lower space... ill wait.

Yay.

I almost wish i'd waited for these instead of my one odd size 1.5 TB Seagate 😛 (last three before that were 1 TB)

Until Seagate counters with a 2 TB model of their own, the 1.5 TB might be the sweet spot for $/GB. There are some signs that WD intends to price the 2 TB at a premium.

Of course, things can and will change in time.

I have set myself a rule for storage upgrade and it has yet to fail me... I never, EVER, perform a storage upgrade... until the day I get an "out of space error"... and on that day I buy the most bang for the buck. I use that for my flash thumb drive, as well as for my fileserver.

Hopefully WD will release cheap 500gb and 1tb versions of this drive.

At $249, you might as well splurge and get the intel SSD, depending on your needs of course.

You mean the 2 TB SSD model?

Seagate probably WOULD have charged a premium for their 1.5 TB model if it had worked.

apples and oranges, this is a storage monster, the intel SSD is a tiny 80GB but a speed demon. You can't replace an 18 wheeler truck with a corvette because their prices are similar, they are totally different classes of vehicles.
