This is probably a silly question but there's been so much trouble with the larger capacity drives lately I'll ask it anyway: there haven't been any problems reported with the firmware on this drive, have there?

Not that I know of. From what I understand, this is probably the premiere 1Tb drive on the market.

Do not use these drives in a RAID setup. They are not made for it.

Otherwise good deal on a great drive.

😀
Dell Home has 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for only $115.99
Plus there is a $26(Instant Discount) (may expire on: 05/28/2009)
Final Price: $115.99 - $26 = $89.99

Excellent price for big storage.

Likely to to be green line...I don't think they put the black in an external enclosure.

This is true, they use their Greenpower drives in the externals.
The blacks are better performing (I wish I had them!).

And what is the reason they shouldn't be used in a RAID setup? How are they *not* made for it?

As per Western Digital's Knowledgebase:

WD hard drives have an internal routine that is periodically executed as part of the internal ?Data Lifeguard? process that enhances the operational life expectancy. While the drive is running this routine, if the drive encounters an error, the drive?s internal host/device timer for this routine is NOT canceled causing the drive to be locked in this routine, never becoming accessible to the host computer/controller. This condition can only be reset by a Power Cycle. WD has resolved this issue by making a change to the firmware so when a disk error is encountered, the host/device timer is checked first and then the routine is canceled allowing the drive to be accessible to the host computer/controller. The interval rate for the error condition to occur is 1-4 weeks, and will only occur if the drive encounters a disk error when running this routine.

Western Digital's RE (Raid Edition) drives allow for TLER adjustments. Allowing for greater compatibility with raid cards.

Yep, what magnux said. If an error is encountered in most desktop class drives they will go into a deep error recovery routine which causes them to drop out of the RAID array. Then you get the fun task of rebuilding your array which takes forever with drives of this size.

If I remember correctly, there is a utility floating around that allows you to change the TLER state of the drives.

The Black drives are rather popular for some very large RAID arrays on AVSForum.

And if using RAID 5+1/6 it shouldn't matter, because you have the hot spare correct? Granted you would have to wait for the array to rebuild.

I was pretty sure that I had seen a few people use black drives for RAID arrays without issues.

We have Fry's in CA (North only), so sometimes we observe deals as &89.99 for 1TB disks which make it with tax the same price, however less hassle in return.
