Western Digital 160GB HDD @ Circuit City

TYhis one only has a 12-month warranty. I would take WD over Maxtor, but the short warranty is a concern.

OM also has the drive on sale for $110 - $30MIR = $80. You can try a PM at CC to OM's before-rebate price to save $10 or $11.

I have this drive as the c: drive. I like it. By the way, even if this is 7200rpm with 8meg cache, it is ata100. The maxtor drives are ata133. A salesperson at CompUSA told me that WD doesn't make ata133 drives, because there really is no difference between the ata100 and ata133 drives. I personally don't realize any difference, but if you bench the hds (I have the ata133 maxtor 160gig, 7200rpm, 8meg cache as the 2nd drive), the maxtor will give you faster numbers. The difference is noticeable. However, the real life difference is negligible from my experience.

The difference between ATA100 + 133 really is neglible. I would not let it affect a buying decision.

You can attempt a pricematch to Sam's Club but CC doesn't really PM well so it is hit or miss. I think Sam's has it for $79. I tried in Gainesville and it was a no go but others on FW report sucess.

Before having one of those Maxtor 160 ata's die on me, I would have agreed with you.

At this point, I'm thinking of getting a couple of these WD's. Yeah, gotta wait for the rebates, but I'll get a little more in credit card rewards and more piece of mind.

all harddrives eventually die. you'll hear stories of ppl's maxtors, western digital, and even seagates dying, although fewer stories about seagates. that's why warranties are so important. i believe there was a research that shows 80% of all harddrives die within 5 years, so w/ a 1 yr warranty, you're pretty much not outta luck when it dies between year 1 to year 5.

//krunk (^_^x)

I also think the makers who are reducing their warranties are likely skimping on the parts for their drives to reduce the price. Most people are not very good about making backups, so I would rather spend a little more on a drive with a longer warranty, such as Seagate. The hope is that you reduce the incidence of failure due to cheap manufacturing.
