Western Digital 120GB SE drive with 8 MB buffer for ~50$+tax from CompUsa after MIR and Amex BVG PM

The Western Digital WD1200JB drive is available this week from CompUsa for 270$ with a 120$ MIR.
The same drive is available online for about 170$. So if you have an Amex BVG card(Gold,Optima) you can PM it and get another 100$ back. That brings the price to about 50$. The only downside is roughly another 20 bucks in taxes , as the taxes are on the original purchase price.
I have had no problem with CompUsa rebates. Their website has a link to check rebates and last time I sent in a rebate I even got an email confirming that my rebate was valid and it would be sent soon.

I don't trust compusa rebates. I have had bad experiences.... Buyer beware.

Now let me see if I have this straight.......Buy this drive at Outpost for $30 more, and pay at least $6.02 for shipping to save approximately $22.25 in taxes (8.25% in my state). Considering that BVG PM from AMEX does not take into consideration taxes or shipping or rebates but only cost paid, I just do not get this one. Please show me the error of my thinking....really, I am serious.

I just checked AMEX web site, looks like only Gold has the BVG, not optima. the gold costs 75 per year. unless you do a lot of pm, it is not worth the money.

BTW I heard from a friend that Bank of America has a similar program to the BVG BUT it only works with retailers and NO online PM

The cost that you pay for the item doesn't matter, since you get the price difference between that price and the low price you can find. You pay $30 extra and you get back $30 extra. What you don't get from Amex are the shipping charges and taxes. Those are yours to pay. And if you can pay $6.02 shipping instead of $22.25 tax, you save $16.23. Makes sense?

to answer the recent spate of questions:

amex bvg does NOT take into account tax and shipping. only the actual cost of the product will be pricematched. therefore, outpost is better b/c you dont have to pay $30 in taxes and only $6 in shipping.

mir = mail in rebate
pm = price match
bvg = best value guarantee

You probably won't be able to get a pricematch to the <$200 versions of this drive since those are OEM drives. The drive that Outpost and CompUSA have the rebate on is the retail drive. This is still a good price AR, but don't count on the pricematch. The model numbers aren't the same (WD1200JB vs WD1200JBRTL).

amex pricematch never really cared about oem or retail. i've filed over 20 claims, pricematching both retail and oem items, never an issue.

I have taken the initiative to buy the drive. I picked up a bunch of rebate slips. I'm going to call Amex ASAP.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Taking a look at the reciept, I noticed that the model number isn't on there.

It does list the CompUSA part number,

"WD 120GB 7200RPM 8" 269.99


is what it says.

Tax brings it up to 283.49.


I have already called AMEX and I got an initial acceptance. They seem to be on the ball there, now - she listed a few 120GB hard disk models from WD and finally got to mine.

And for anyone who wants to know, since the eliimination of BVG with the AMEX Blue card, the Optima Platinum is the only "no annual fee" card that still has BVG. Gold also has it, but as you know it has the $75 annual fee, which I have had waived a few times from mail out offers. Starwood (the hotel chain) Preferred Guest AmEx Card also has the BVG and is fee free to everyone for the first year only, then I believe it has a $30 renewal. Hope this is helpful.

Since this rebate is (I believe) Direct to Western Digital, it shouldn't be too risky.

The address on the rebate form is P.O. Box 821, New Rochelle, NY.

BEWARE of this address.

This is the address of the place where rebates are sent to DIE. This is the infamous TCA operation.

Would it behoove me to send certified mail to that address? Is it even possible (to send certified mail to a PO BOX)?


If they have to sign for it, that's more proof that I have. But they can, on the same token, reject it.

What are the opinions on that?

The Optima Platinum card does not have the BVG program anymore as far as it shows on their Optima Platinum. But, the Starwood does. First year free, and 30$ renewal every year after. I wish I saw this before because I just got the amex gold card which has a $75 annual fee and the best value guarantee program as well. Maybe I'll cancel the card after the first month or so and see how much they'll give me back...

1) Sign up for Amex Starwood card
2) Order HDD from CompUSA
3) Send in rebate
4) PM with Amex w/ price at "1st E web"
5) take bank!


Ok, I'm a student, my credit is like low 700 high 600, I have a 15/hr fulltime job right now, but nothing in savings (just moved and had to pay first & last + a TV and other expensive junk)
Think they'd approve me? I need this HDD for my DivX box :D

Has anyone noticed that the rebate form says WD1200BBRTL and it does not say WD1200JBRTL.
I wonder if this was a mistake on Compusa's part and the special edition drive doesn't actually have a rebate
but it is the WD1200BBRTL (the one with 2 meg cache buffer) that has a rebate.

I think I want to do this deal but I have a bad feeling it's not the Special Edition drive that has a rebate and
Compusa messed up.
Can anyone confirm?
