Dell is currently running a 20% off Dell System Upgrades promotion.

The 120gig drive listed in the Dell Upgrades section lists for $235 (link here). If you look at the detailed specs, it mentions that it has 8meg cache. While the brand isn't mentioned explicitly, it looks like the WD SE to me!

So thats $235 - 20% discount + free shipping = $188!

nice deal! i think this is def the 8meg SE given the product specs page... now if only i had a reason to get this thing... =)

Cache (total)
20, 40, 80GB == 2MB
120GB ====== 8MB

BTW: They also have the Seagate Barracuda 80 Gig for 142.76 - 20% + free shipping. This is the one with the fluid dynamic bearings and runs virtually silent. It is also at the top of the heap in performance as far as other 2mb cache drives and only a little slower than the 8mb cache models. Anyway, a very nice drive at a very nice price if you would like to eliminate drive noise.

And - why is it that the other western digital drives - they title them properly (Western Digital) - but this drive now? are they refurb's or oem's? Who's got details? Plus - the manufactuer part # they list - nowhere to be found on WD's web site.

I took a chance and ordered this item. It looks like Dell has a "Total Satisfaction" Return Policy, so it looks like I'll be okay of this is not the Western Dig Special Edition.

Can I ask a question and ask what "raid" is? Will this make a HD go faster?

RAID is a way of configuring multiple hard drives to work together (my layman's terms definition) You can configure 2 like drives to work as one, with half of the data getting written to one drive, the other half to the other. This is referred to as RAID 0 or striping.

It's late and I don't feel like explaining anymore, so check out Atech's RAID FAQ.

Yeah, but I read (storagereview.com??) that idle noise is good, but seeks are fairly noisy (typical of Segate).

Don't quote me...just my $.02

Generally there are two versions, retail and OEM (not refurbished). OEM is just a bag with the drive, the retail has a disk for install (you an d/l it free at the manufactures website), a little booklet on installation (again, you can d/l the manual and install stuff for free) 4 screws and a IDE cable. That's generally the only differance. Usually the warranty and everything else for OEM hard drives is the same. You probably got the OEM version, bare bag. Personally I don't think an extra $50 or whatever for retail hard drives is worth the cable and screws :)

dammit dammit dammit paypal debit account is under $188 DOH!!!

Wait a minute...isn't this an impulse buy for my ass which already has dual 60GB WD's plus a 40GB IBM?

hmm... But 120+120=240 which MUST be better than 160! ;)

Ah, the ways to justify this purchase when you're only a poor college student...

Damn, I can't justify it... :( I really would like a better 3D card first(looking for the new 8500 eXP with VIVO!)

Sure looks like a WD1200JB the specs listed on the Dell site match the Western Digital specs exactly.

Are there any rebates that can go along with this? I thought I remember seeing a $100 rebate thru Fry's or something, I dunno, maybe i'm wrong...but still...if there were any rebates, this would be incredible.

I ordered this one yesterday at 5:50pm and got my confirm at 7:30pm last night. MY order detail just says:

"Order detail - order placed 3/19/02 5:05:50 PM

Description: Hard Drive; 120GB Ultra ATA, 7200RPM, for Dell Dimension
4300/8200 Qty: 1 Unit Price: $188.00
"

The specs say it is a 8mb Cache.

Whenever anyone receives this drive please post and let us know if it the WD120gb JB Special Edition 8MB Cache Drive. Retail??? etc..

I of course will do the same.

I will also be returning it if the drive is not the 8mb version.
