These people do not go out and physically assault others as far as I know and while they do disrupt sacred events, there are counter-organizations that protect these events. Our society should not rely on silencing the voices of others, our society should rely on educating others that these kinds of messages are wrong.

But as socially liberal as I am, I'd be willing to make an exception for the Phelps family. Not because they're religious zealots, but because they aren't. Their claim of being religious is just a sham to do what they do.

Exactly. What a lot of people don't get is that just because someone claims to be religious, and wears the mantle of religiosity, it doesn't make that person a true Christian or whatever he/she claims to be. The condition of your heart (mind) -> What you say -> What you do. These people are doing something wrong and not at all what Christ would do, and in all likelihood they are not true Christians but merely pretending to be (whether they believe it themselves or not is another story) Christians. Tares among the wheat.

Nah, although the Phelps have had some legitimate run-ins with the law.

All I can say is that if bad manners were a capital crime, the Phelps would be the first with their backs against the wall, even before the white supremacists and that driver on his cell phone who cuts you off without signaling.

The name Mary goes back a lot farther back than that. Thousands of years further back. It's probably the oldest female name there is.
