My friend's daughter's friend tragically died over the weekend in an auto accident. No drugs, alcohol, etc but apparently the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.

Link to news story

Anyways, the Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest b/c:

According to a release from the Westboro Baptist Church, tragedies are happening in Maryland because the state is persecuting the organization, and their demonstration is based on their belief that "God hates Maryland."

Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Westboro Baptist Church leader the Rev. Fred W. Phelps Sr., said the teens died because God put a curse on Maryland.

"Maryland is a state of rebels with no cause," Shirley Phelps-Roper said Monday.

WTF!!! What kind of non-sense is this? I can only hope for the worse for these sick assholes.

Just ignore them. They're typical religious zealots. The kind that cause every single problem we have in this world.

best thing people can do is not to pay any attention to them. They want the media hype and attention and best way to fight this is to pretend they dont exist

Why would God hate Maryland? It's named after the mother of his child. Is he still feeling guilty about that one-night stand? "Can't stand this baby mama drama... fuck Maryland!"

If anything, I think the existence of Fred Phelps proves that God hates Kansas. And his success proves God hates the rest of us too.

wrong, the best thing someone could do is kick the living shit out of them. Though nobody really wants to go to jail. But they want us all to die, and I feel the same towards them now.

According to a Scrabble calculator:

dillpickles = 20
anyotherpickles = 29

(ignoring 50 point bonus)

Any other pickles > dill pickles!

Neither of those are single words, so they're invalid for Scrabble purposes. A valiant effort to defend a doomed perspective, though.

I would love to see that church nuked and/or all of its members lined up in front of a big hole and shot. Easy cleanup, just bulldoze dirt over the hole.

I would say they are atypical religious zealots, because they zealously ignore the teachings of their religion. You could say that that is typical of religious zealots, but I would say that you just don't hear about the religious zealots who don't do stupid shit like blowing themselves (and other stuff) up, killing abortion doctors, or protesting at funerals.

Why? Fly them over to Yugoslavia and use them as mine detonators. At least some good will come of it.

They're not religious they're just fucking insane. 50 years ago they would have been locked up in the paddy wagon. But because the left wing nutters think we live in Germany in 1940, that's not going to happen.

See? people like this ass right here criticize religion with one left hand. And with another left hand, they shield them so they have an excuse to make these the archetypal religious person.

The responsibility of churches is to preach the gospel, not to judge whether people or states are cursed or not. God hates sin, not people, and the message Christ taught was of redemption from sin and eternal life. You don't read about Jesus or the apostles or the early church running protests or focusing in on politics, or changing the laws of nations, because that is not the work of evangelism, which is what Christians are called to do. Christians are to preach eternal judgment, yes, and the message of salvation to as many people as are willing to hear it, but not to determine whether a death or disaster is "an act of God".

When Jesus was asked questions by people whether a certain tragedy was judgment from God for their sin, He answered them by saying essentially that everyone is a sinner and repentence (part of salvation) will keep us from facing eternal judgment.

"Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
And Jesus said to them, 'Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.'" (Luke 13:1-5)

Cliffs: A real church wouldn't be doing this kind of thing. These people should be there to comfort and support and do whatever good they can, not criticize and accuse.

That works for the general public, to a degree (and we're not ignoring them), but not for the people they are actively protesting.

edit:
OP, perhaps you can contact the Patriot Guard Riders.
http://www.patriotguard.org/

They actively STOP the Westboro baptist church from protesting funerals. Generally it's for fallen soldiers, but perhaps they will take interest in your issue.

Good luck.
