I have a big choice coming up soon.

I am not sure if I should take this job up there.

I need impressions of this area anyone?

😕

Not much up there besides West Point & Poughkeepsie (sp?). Still, it's lovely this time of year.

Where are you moving from?

Im moving from knoxville TN

Im bored as hell here.

I need some city life just not all the city costs if you know what I mean.

That's right, you're the dude who just split up with his GF. If the job is decent I would seriously consider it. Cost of living shouldn't be too high there and you're only a 45 minutes train ride from Manhattan.

how much are you looking to spend on rent?

if you want the city life, you won't really experience it much up there unless you travel to nyc a lot. the outlying boroughs of manhattan(bronx, brooklyn, queens, staten island) will have much lower rents than manhattan and still provide the city life you sound like you are seeking.

there are also other alternatives like hoboken, nj; jersey city, nj; pavonia-newport, nj which are all right across the hudson river from the city.

Not if he's working in West Point. That's way north of NYC. You wouldn't want to live in Jersey and work in West Point trust me on this one.

Check out White Plains NY. That's not too far from NYC and not far from West Point. Peekskill would be better for the commute but is kind of remote. Then again, I haven't been there in years so it may have changed some.

i agree. definitely don't live in nyc if you're working in west point.

i thought the OP was just looking for a job in the nyc area.

that area is really rural. there are a some very nice parks around there including harriman state park. there's a great big shopping outlet near there too.

but if you're not into lots of natural scenery i don't think it's for you.

are you in the military? there's a big military academy there.

hummm

its very rual i dont want that anymore.

knoxville is way too rual for me.

*sighes*

Maybe this is not the place for me

Theres also Yonkers, which has some nice areas and borders the Bronx. But the majority of Westchester County, where Yonkers, White Plains and Peekskill are , is expensive especially if you plan on buying a house. Especially the suburbs surrounding white plains. You could look for Northern Westchester, which is suburb and about 45 min from NYC and 30 minutes from West Point.

Ok is 45K enough to survive in WEST POINT NEW YORK???

A 45k yearly salary? Surely. That is enough to more than survive in all but the truly expensive places like San Diego (coast of CA), manhattan, etc...

45K should be enough to get you through the year and have good decent spending cash.

I guess it all depends on what you drive, where you decide to stay, etc...

When I lived in Rochester, NY (60 miles east of Buffalo-Go Bills!!!) I had a nice new 1 bedroom apartment (just me living there) and I paid $450/mo in rent. I lived 10 minutes from the beach on Lake Ontario. That was a cool town to live in.

I hate snow and bitter cold though which is why I live in San Diego, CA.

I was up there years ago training USMA cadets during the summer.

Wappinger Falls, which is nearby, was OK. There was this real cool bar that had some notable bands from time-to-time. Went to NYC by train a couple times. It was alright. Met some great people around there.

Personally, I like Knoxville, TN much better. Of course I grew up about 75 miles north of Knoxville too.

Why do you like Knoxville so much better. Also when you make this comparison know that im black and there is not much for blacks to do in Knoxville

can you take a road trip to stay a weekend in west point or in the area? or at least a short flight?

i'm thinking west point is not for you.
