When I put my car into Manual mode I am hearing this weird sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh6n0Q4wObQ

When I put my phone under my car you can defiantly hear it.

RPM is not changing. All I am doing is putting it from Drive to Manual Mode.

Any Ideas? I am thinking something to do with the Transmission pump.

Be helpful if you included the make/model of the vehicle.

edit: I found this in google http://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v35-2003-06/188854-transmission-hissing-sound.html

Dont know if it'll help though.

take a gander at OP's signature

yep its an 05 g35 sedan.

its not really a hissing sound. did you listin to the video? it kinda sounds like belt sqeeking or some metal spinning on something.

if i rev a little bit 300 or so the noise stops.

I checked my fluid level and color today. its over filled and it has a light brown appearance on paper towles.

i just has the fluid changed 12k miles ago 13 quarts flush at the dealer.

my friend thinks scince the fluid got dirty after 12k that my tranny is on the way out.

what do you guys think?

Well, I don't like the color or the overfill...

In the old days, too much fluid would get foamy, but I'm not sure these days.

Yea I heard something about overfill will just go out through the breather. So I am not sure.

But since the color is light brown in 12k miles from completely new fluid, what does that mean?

It's either overheated or dirty I suppose? Neither of which would be good.

Did they use the right fluid?

See if your car takes a special fluid. Most dealers bulk stock Dexron yet many cars now call for THEIR special fluid. Most can still use a updated dexron but some can;t.

Try a drain and fill. (i.e. drain fluid out and top off). Use a good syn fluid to see if that helps.

Yep your car takes a nissan J fluid or the newwer S fluid I have read.
Here is a video with the first part doing a 4qt drain and fill...
http://www.infinitihelp.com/diy/gsedan/projects/infiniti_g35_transmission_service.htm

So get 4qts of Valvoline Maxlife or any other good fluid that meets the J or S spec and do a drain fill to see if that helps.

80% of my miles are highway. I havent Auto X'ed or anything that would heat up the fluid..

Your problem is that it's not a Tremec or Getrag :awe:

jatco blah blah

yes the dealer needs to use Matic S which replaced Matic J. They used 12 quarts of it(Matic S). I cannot use any other fluid other then Matic S or they will not approve any warrenty work on the tranmission, Yes they get the fluid tested. I also know how to do the DIY for the Pan, but if I have a problem I do not want to prolong anything, to when Ill be out of warranty. If you understand what I mean.

1/05/10 is when I had this done

So Dirty fluid and its not even a year, = trouble?

I guess only thing I can do is head over to the dealer.

That is illegal, of course. You can use any fluid that meets the Matic S specs.

^ Yep I know. But in the manual it says and I quote

Using automatic transmission fluid other than Genuine Nissan Matic J ATF will cause deterioration
in driveability and automatic transmission durability, and may damage the automatic transmission,
which is not covered by the warranty.

Many people use Amsoil or Redline with out issue, but I am still under warranty.

As he said, its federal law. Maxlife from valvoline meets the nissan spec. There are others as well.

Just do a drain and fill. Its only 4qts so that will give you a idea if that is even the problem. If gets a little better then drain and fill again. If not then its something else.

I understand its the law, but I rather not go into that boat with them, They turn nasty. I rather just involve my warranty and let them take care of it. Since then if the Tranmission does fail I cannot be held liable in any way.

Not everybody has signatures enabled, mainly because of irritating crap like what's in yours.

That's a tough one since there's so many variables in the trans. Could be a ball check or seal not quite fully sealing etc. I'd take it in and at least see what they say since it's under warranty. If they're trying to say it's normal and it's something that just started happening, take it to a different dealer. Recording sounds never works out too great for diagnosing problems (or even general exhaust note) because it never sounds like it does IRL.

Irritating crap like his computer specs? So, you know, people don't have to ask what they are when posting on a computer oriented forum. He was even polite when pointing it out, no need to get defensive.

Update: My friend rolled in his dads 2010 G37, was talking to him in the garage at school. He puts it into manual mode as he is about to go and guess what, the exact same hissing sound. I told him to hold up and he put it into drive and it went away, 1000% the same thing from my car.

So this is normal.
