Regrettably, the Verizon version of the Galaxy Note 2 will indeed have a locked bootloader that prevents its users from installing proper custom ROMs with kernels and radios. This news shouldn’t shock the Android world too much, considering the Galaxy S III recently launched on Verizon with the same restrictions. Still, it’s a sad day for Verizon customers.

Samsung phones are generally unlockable. With the SGS3 on Verizon, that changed. Looks to continue.

you can root it with ease and if you really want an unlocked bootloader wait a week and we will have an unsecure image from a note 2 thats on att that you can flash over the verizon version.

verizon is known for locking down bootloaders and its not really a big deal since most popular phones have been cracked open

ps the galaxy s3 on verizon has been unlocked,rooted,nand write,kernal etc for months now so there is no reason to worry if you want to stick with verizon and use the note 2

verizon has been always locking phones down,My droid x had an encrypted bootloader that verizon put on there

The Note 2 may be cracked quickly because devs have the open GSM Note 2s to work against. Should point out that the Moto bootloaders have never been cracked to this day, they're worked around with kexec.

Rooting I have no doubt, but the bootloader... Is that even feasible? For the galaxy S3 the phone's roms from provider to provider were not compatible and caused bricks.

Doesn't matter. No one should purchase the Verizon Note 2 regardless of locked or not. It's hideous. How can they put the Verizon logo on the home button and big banner also on the back? They need to pay me to advertise.

Unsure. The S3 was opened with a leak, though a fair amount of research was done beforehand. It wasn't as tightly clamped as Moto.

Avoiding using one of the best phones of the year on the indisputably best carrier in the US because it has a logo on it is a bit hard to swallow.
