<< If you think he was bad, what some Canadians consider to have been the best Prime Minister ever of Canada made all of his major decisions on governing the country after consulting with his dog. >>

I can just see it now;

OK where do we sign to buy 4 nuclear reactors and 17 Boing Aircraft?
- just a second Jim, apparently they can't count.

or

The peace process is now complete, all the Arab State and Israel have
reached a peace deal, unfortunately since there is no leader of the
free world to help us sign the deal we will all be heading to Iraq
to put the finishing touches on the deal.

LOL

I think the laughing started with impeachment of the president over sex, intensified with the Elian Gonzalez saga, and is becoming deafening with the election.

I don't necessarily think people are laughing at American democracy but I think this election highlights a few aspects which we find amusing such as the whole Electoral college. Americans seem to worship their constitution as if it were some sacred document. The "founding fathers" are such mythical figures that everything they did is infallible. Well, while the US system of checks and balances certainly does have its advantages, I think its time to face up to the fact that after 200+ years, the constitution may need a bit of updating. I'm not sure what the best system would be... moving towards a simple popular vote tally would seem like a reasonable solution, but there should at least be some discussion of reform and defenders of the status quo shouldn't hide behind the "sacred Constitution" as their only defence. I for one would like to hear a defence of the current electoral college which may very well hand the presidency to someone who lost the total popular vote.

Someone in an earlier thread threw out the populations of the areas won by Bush and those won by Gore. Bush populated areas had 143 million compared to something around 120 million for Gore. That's a 20 million difference there and to me that means more than a 200k difference nationally for the election. Countless others have undoubtedly described how with the current system popular the winner of the popular vote isn't a true reflection of the country.

"the constitution may need a bit of updating" Being that you spelled Defense with a C (defence):) I'm assuming you're not from the US. But just so you know there are 26 amendments to the constitution, so it has been updated.

<<Who cares what they think? We're the most powerful nation in the world, economically and military wise. >>

Oh yeah, with brilliant comments like this, we can all be assured that it won't last. Every single civilization that became powerful throughout history has managed to get fat and lazy and overconfident -- only to get overtaken by others. With people thinking like this, it's no wonder........

This situation is truly embarassing, but I hardly think most countries in the world have much of anything to laugh about.... they have their own issues to deal with. It just shows that every place has their problems, and the US (despite what zealots think) is no exception.
