Give me one good reason, and I'll help.

"So the number next to our team's name is bigger than the number next to thier team's name" isn't good enough.

1.4ghz of athlonXP sitting here, mostly idle :)

edit: Um, those numbers show AT as winning... I don't see the dilemma.

"*** DSLR Team Starfire leads by 798 WU's ***"

I do it just because, my computer is idle most of the time, so i figure i might as well do something "productive" ..... idle time bugs me, so i run SETI, so i contribute to something, i turn it off when i game or whatever, but i try to keep idle cycles to a minimum, besides, it lets me see how much my upgrade helps, when i OC'd from 800 - 850, i got a 30 minute drop in time, now there are tangible results!

What is the point? Everyone's doing all this "crunching". Do you guys think about things like energy conservation? I personally don't leave my computer on when I'm not using it and only use it for 2-3 hours per day.

1) It is kinda fun...friendly competition
2) The SETI@home project is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest distributed computing project
3) The team is a great bunch of folks...even pitching in over $2000 to help out David McOwen in his fight to clear his name against the State of Georgia (read about that in the Distributed Computing forum)
4) Stats! Stats! Stats!! :)
5) Put that overclocked idle time to some use
6) Why not?

You telling me using my computer for 2-3 hours a day as opposed to leaving it on for 24 hours a day for the sake of "crunching WU's" is not conserving energy?

Some of my machines crunching are SQL Servers and domain controllers for my <ahem> small business (company of 2 :) ). They sit idle a fair amount of the time but run 24/7 (PCs don't draw that much power...many people leave a couple of TVs running in the house at the same time, let their cars idle for a few minutes in drive-thru lanes and at long red lights)

Are you looking at this page?

If so, don't forget to include the handicap

Now this I can understand.

And I'm not totally against the idea, I think it's great that you guys have a sense of team spirit. I've thought about doing it but I can't find a good reason to let my computer run all day.

What's the handicap for? So, the better we do, the more points they take off? I don't think I like the rules for this game.

If someone joins the team and has, say, 1000 WUs already under their belt, those cannot count for this race. The race is only for new Work Units (WUs) produced during the race period.

Also, if someone leaves a team, the WUs produced by that person during the race still count toward the race totals.

<< How much would an Athlon XP 1900+ with 512 MB ram produce per day? >>

Probably around 5-7/day...depending on other uses of the PC and if you're o/c or not.

Are you running the GUI screensaver? Sounds like it. You should really switch to using the CLI and SetiDriver to manage the CLI.

Check out Teriba's Site
