no. i don't pay for friends.

wow, your right. your comment has brought my whole life into perspective. what a lie i have lived...

seriously, thats the dumbest oldest argument in the book. dont thread crap. if you dont like the thread u dont have to be a jacka$$

lol, you asked a question, i replied and explained why. don't get your panties on fire.

Sounds like you struck a nerve. Such a violent reaction could only be the result of some lingering resentment. Hell, this entire thread is merely a thinly-veiled cry for help. Sounds like fratboy is feeling a little shamed about his choices and needed some validation.

I'm leaning more towards "pasty socially incompetent nerds are bitter that not even the service fraternities would pick them up."

Some see the glass as half-full 😉

And the fraternity I joined was quite different from "typical" varities. Nothing against IFC organizations at all, just stating that different groups are meant for different people.

The "paying for friends" argument is generally used by those either too lazy or ignorant to do their own research. My dues were less than the cost of a mid-range video card, and I could tell you exactly where they went. I've graduated now, but will continue keeping in touch with everyone from my chapter (and dozens more that I've met through road trips and out-of-state events) for years to come. Definitely one of the better decisions I've made.

Edit: I can make the above assertation because I used to be one of those people, and I held a similar opinion. Luckily, the organization I joined changed my mind about my fraternity in particular, as well as the Greek system as a whole.

are they really like animal house and revenge of the nerd? (/still has 2 more years of community college before he can join a fraternity)

Some are quite close, and some couldn't be more different. Really depends on the organization, and sometimes on that particular chapter (certain fraternities are more uniform nationally than others). Only way to find out is to get to know the guys involved, and perhaps rush. Besides, it's free anyway, can't do much harm.

I can't speak for other colleges, but the school I went to... fraternities were just an excuse to party and drink all the time. I went to college to get an education and I was paying my own way so I wasn't going to waste my time and money drinking. So, no.

cool, ill have to check them out at the senior college i plan on attending, small college so not much frat activity. plus, they are religious college (two im considering actually, one methodist, other baptist), but best schools in my state by far, for business and/or biology. So, the partying may not be as good as with the universities, but i will have to see.

Pi Kappa Alpha aka PIKE at Rutgers Univ.
I'm an EE and still found time for a fraternity and managed to maintain a good GPA.

my school was a commuter school and there was no college life for any of us. in my last few years of being a business major i felt cheated out of the college experience so i went greek, went nuts, graduated, and have lots of stories and friends and networks.

all clubs make you pay dues so the paying for friends argument is really lame.

What's with the fascination of the Greek alphabet? I mean I know we are amazing and everything, but come on now. 😉

it just depends on the chapter. some chapters have the "party hardy" mentality. Whereas some have a reputation of high grades.
