WEP overhead

I just got a Netgear WGR614 router and WG311 card for my setup. The router has problems transmitting through the wall to the receiving pc 12 ft away but that is another story.

If I enable WEP, how much of a performance hit do you think I will take?

Enable it and try. Takes only 10 sec. to disable if no good.

i don't think you'll see reception performance go down, just transfer speeds.

I gave it a try last night and if there is a performance hit, it is negligable with my setup. I have a cable connection and a Netgear WGR614 router so my biggest problem is keeping a strong wireless connection not losing a few bytes/sec in transfer speeds.

This makes me glad I have a Belkin WAP....I can use it throughout my whole house with no problems at all (basement all the way up to the second floor, and in all corners).

You are lucky. I finally got a fairly strong signal by mounting the router on the connecting wall and changing the channel it was using. I can't imagine this thing transmitting up two flights! The router is now about 12 feet from the pc.
