A filling wore down a little while back, so yesterday I went to the dentist to get it replaced. He drilled out the old one and the small cavity that was there beacuse the old filling wore out. He then replaced it and sent me home.

He used novacaine or something like it (4 shots in the back of the mouth). My whole tounge and jaw was numb for about 3 hours afterward.

All the sudden today, my jaw in the very back (where he put the shots) HURTS LIKE HELL. I can't open my mouth all the way because it hurt when I move it.

Is this normal from where he injected the needle? Could it be infected or something? I have heard of dry socket, but what is that?

Thanks,
Ed

dry socket is only when u've had your tooth pulled. i've had a sore jaw after dental visits too. it'll probably go away.

Get the dentist on the phone via his answering service or whatever, and get him to call in a prescription for pain medication. He'll also let you know what the problem is, whether it's normal and how it can be put right. You paid him enough already, so don't hesitate to call. Hurry before the drug stores close!

Try not to take narcotics if you can avoid it. My dentists has me take 4 Advil which usually does the trick. I try to stay away from addictive prescription meds if I can.

I have never had that problem. Of course my dentist is so good I can fall asleep while he is working. :)

There shouldn't be much pain at all. Call your dentist and he might be able to tell you what it is. If he makes something up, switch dentists.

I finally got a hold of him. He said it is normal, because he sticks the needle in the muscle, and sometimes it will get sore. He told me to take some Ibuprofen, so I did and it feels a lot better now.

Screw that. Take the happy pills. Pain relief through the power of modern medicine for me.

I'd rather not be so virtuous and not be in pain.

Go get some NowAndLaters. Open one and put it in your mouth, biting down hard for 10 seconds with the tooth/teeth that hurt. Then open your mouth as hard and as fast as you can.

Problem solved.
