Went to the auto show and narrowed it down to 3 cars

So FINALLY being out of school, I thought it was about time to look for a new car. I went to the auto show and narrowed it down to 3. I would like AT's input:

Car 1: Infiniti G35 Sedan
+ very reliable (3 of my friends have it)
+ looks good
+ easy to find used (it will likely be the cheapest of the 3)

- they are all over the place

Car 2: Lexus GS 350 (don't know much about this car)
+ Great gas mileage

Car 3: Hyundai Genesis
+ most plush to sit in
+ best warranty
+ best performance (I think)
+ best looks IMO

- Hard to find it used right now
- its a Hyundai?

What kind of G35 are you looking for? I had an '05 G35 Sport sedan 6MT and loved it. I've owned a BMW E36 325i 4dr 5MT, Lexus GS300 amongst other cars and the Infiniti was my favorite.

I tried getting an '08 G35 Sport sedan 6MT but after months of looking could not find one. If you are looking for just any old '08 G35(x) then you should be able to get a really good deal. All of the dealers I went to had lots full of them. If you are looking for a manual, good luck. I doubt you'll find one.

Geologists do. Exxon-Mobil has deep pockets....

As a side note, have you tried the Genesis? It's not exactly an M3, but you can get a Genesis with a big V8 for well under $40,000. For that kind of money, you're going to have a much smaller V6.

Like all Hyundais, the Genesis is not particularly clever - it's basically a direct rip-off of Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. You should think of it in the same way that a Kia would compare to a Corolla - not quite as good, but very close, and quite a lot cheaper. And Hyundais are pretty reliable these days, too.

Another option is the Cadillac CTS with the 306HP direct-injected six. It's not quite as fast as the other three, but it is very big and nicely priced. Other options include the Pontiac G8 GXP and, of course, the BMW 335i (which is what I would buy if I were a geologist who wanted a luxury car.)

There might also still be a turbocharged version of the Subaru Legacy sedan which you could look at.

Not sure about 07s but you should be able to get an 08 G35 for under $30K depending on options. I ended up ordering an 09 BMW 335i E90 6MT w/sport package for a little over $40K.

He's out of law school, not undergrad.

First year associates at large firms make a ton of money. After the experience that has been law school, and I know it first hand, he deserves to buy himself a nice car if he wants.

I won't be going to a big firm when I'm done, so I'll just have to live vicariously through the OP's eventual purchase :)

Have you ever been in one of these?

I have.

They're supposed to be lovely to drive, but they're no Lexus.

On the other hand, if you want to have fun driving AND have sex in the backseat, this is THE car to buy.

the g35 sedan is wicked. the styling wasnt for me (pre the body change in 07. the newer ones are sick). I just bought an 05 coupe and absolutely love it. Almost got killed with the snow tonight though...making a tirerack purchase right now ;)

What kind of tires? I bought some Yokohama S4 Advan AS tires for mine and they were terrible. They sucked even in good weather. I would avoid those especially if you expect to use them in snow.

lol, didn't see the legal advice tagline. Ok, I can buy that.

I prefer to pay off my house first before I indulge on toys. And that is happening next May! :) Already started my shopping list :)

Damn... oh well. To think I am ecstatic I am buying an 06 MB E350 4Matic for my wife and I have been out of school for a long time. But then, my house will be paid off come May. Already started my shopping list for May :)

the Genesis is aiming towards Lexus LS series, not the same target as GS350 and G35.

lexus' are stereotyped as boring cars. wther this is true or not, i dont know.i personally like the IS series, at least on aesthetics.

but the G8 GXP is a freakin beast and it's plenty big enough.

it just doesn't have the luxury badge that comes along with lexus and crew.

and as you said, you only sat in a G8. and if it wasn't the GXP, please don't even begin to talk about its driving experience.

You're right - I haven't driven one. However, you don't need to drive one to note the non-luxurious seats and exposed pressed-steel subwoofer frames extending into the trunk. There's a reason why it hasn't got a luxury badge - it's not a luxury car.

I stated in this thread that it's supposed to be great to drive, but it won't be in the same league as the G35 or CTS.

2003 Maxima, tune it up with NOS and tightened/lower springs. Represent big time at the lights.

I had an '09 Lexus GS300 and though I liked it a lot, it was not very exciting. It was a wonderful car to take on long road trips but for short trips to the supermarket, I would take my 325i.

Personally I would get the g35 coupe just because it looks awesome, but if I had the money I'd go for a 335i which would be nice to have.

Speaking of which, I'll be starting in the industry as a geologist come May.

And the pay for starters is six-figures incredible.
