Went to a shooting range yesterday

Last night I went with some people to Classic Pistol in Southampton, PA. Before last night, I never knew that shooting guns could be so much fun. We got a chance to shoot a bunch of different ones: AR-15, MP5, Glock 17, Beretta 90-2, .38 Special and a SiG P229R. The AR-15 and MP5 were cool when we turned it on full-auto :evil:.

It turns out that I'm in the minority of shooters that I'm right-handed but I'm left-eye dominant. It didn't really matter though, it was actually easier. How common is it to have opposite dominance?

I had a blast, just thought that I would share. I'll definately wind up getting a pistol for range shooting when I turn 18.

Good that you had a safe, fun, enjoyable experience.

I used to be left eye dominant, but switched eyes through recognizing it and some training.

Here's a little trick:

On your shooting glasses, stick a piece of tape, smudge of vasoline or chapstick over your left eye. This obstruction confuses the brain and your right eye will take over. Through time your right eye will become more dominant.

To add: you can do that at home, too. Wear a pair of shooting glasses with a translucent obstruction on them while performing hand-eye tasks.

Hmmm... thanks. Now I just have to get to the range and shoot some more. No one in my family owns a gun, so I'm going to have to try and figure something out.

Gonna go shooting on saturday, but I go fairly often. When I go to Iraq, I'll have to have a big shootoff, and expend my stockpile of rounds.

Same here. My problem is that my right eye vision is MUCH worse. I can't hold a rifle steady in my left but can't aim worth sh*t with my right.

dang...my target range in CA doesn't even allow you to shoot fast. no double shots. no head shots.

I always have fun though.

I believe you have to be at least 21 to buy a handgun from any dealer. In some states it's legal to buy to buy a handgun in a private transaction as long as you're over 18. Find out first.

The Range I go to costs $12 an hour plus whatever I spend for my ammo. I go to Wally World and get big value packs of ammo and shoot for couple of hours. Plus I usually run a couple boxes of good ammo just to make sure my pistols are still up to snuff.

Usually if you rent one of their pistols, you gotta use their ammo.

Usually if you rent one of their pistols, you gotta use their ammo.

Yeah most ranges do that, most of the time the range ammo is pretty cheap. One of the places I go has some decent reloads, but at the one I usually go to the owner loads it himself and the junk seems like it doesn't even want to cycle the gun.

Yeah, it's sort of like when big cats get their first taste of blood...they just go crazy like that.

I want to go shooting (all the shooting I've done has always been rifles and shotguns, out in the middle of nowhere), but ranges are pricey if you don't have your own stuff...

I dig going to the range and shooting clay piegons every once in a while.

If you own a weapon (unloaded of course), try the following:

1 Place the weapon at your side and find an object in the room as a "target".
2 Quickly bring the weapon up aiming it at the target.
3 Without moving your head or weapon, close one eye.

Are the weapon's sites lined up with your open eye? If so, then your open eye is your dominant eye.

If not, then close your open eye and open the opposite eye. The sites should be lined up and this eye is your dominant eye.

CAR-15

Um, the AR-15 is the technical name for the original gun sold by ArmaLite to Colt somewhere in the 50's/60's. The military designation for the AR-15 is the M16, like the Beretta Model 92 is known as M9 in the military. The AR-15 is now sold by Colt (and other manufacturers) for semi-automatic variants.

Since you like Googling, the CAR-15 is a whole weapons system, mostly referring to ultra-short and carbine variants of the AR-15. (Not the same series/class as the M4 though)
