Went to a shooting range for the first time. TAKE MY MONEY!

I kinda like the way they look. Then again, I'm a fan of minimalism and industrialism in general. From what I've read so far, Glocks seem to be extremely durable, reliable, etc, albeit with "no frills" aesthetics. I don't care what the thing looks like - in fact, I prefer subtle to "cool." A couple Glocks are definitely on my list of guns to try before I buy.

Glocks aside, as it doesn't look like they make 22s, how hard is it to find 22lr ammo? Again, two Walmarts in one day had none. I'm sure ammo at the range will be price gouged heavily. If it's going to be a pain in the ass to find the ammo, then I may reconsider picking this. I haven't kept up with the political nonsense, but does this have something to do with this ammo hoarding thing as of late? For practical reasons, should I go with something else?

Anyway, I think I'm going to plan for next week to go rent a few guns at the range. They have a deal where as long as you buy their ammo, $25 gives you an all access pass to their hand guns, plus the actual session cost ($15/hr). I'm going to try to get my girlfriend's dad (veteran) to come with me and help me out, so I'm not sure exactly when I'll be doing this. Definitely looking forward to it, though.

Yes, it's still proving hard to find 22. It's coming back a little bit here and there (mainly in gun shops) but you won't find them at walmart where they only get a few boxes in at a time. Almost everything else has been back in stock though which is nice.
 
I personally have a couple requirements when it comes to handguns:
Lever Safety
External Hammer
.380+

Anthing that doesn't meet all 3 can GTFO. Still thinking about getting a Beretta 92. Girlfriend's dad talked me into it yesterday since that was his sidearm when he was in SWAT.

I never cared for the feel of those guns personally. Their shotguns are very nice though. I own a 20 gauge O/U Beretta and it is one of my favorite guns.

The biggest complaint about the ergonomics of the Beretta 92 is the placement of the safety (up on the slide, rather than somewhere on the frame like many pistols).

I would also suggest looking at a 1911 to see if you like the feel, and if not, some CZ variant. Certain CZs come with a decocker, but others come with a manual safety. A SAO Sig will come with a safety, and is also worth a look.

Agree to disagree. Yes they're expensive but IMHO you get a higher quality firearm. Saving money on firearms doesn't strike me as a wise idea, generally speaking.
 
I LOVE guns.

I just wish NYC wasn't such a hard ass over them.

I would love to have a collection of handguns, rifles and sniper rifles. And, I would enjoy having my own basement/backyard (cinder block, long structure) range - two to 4 lanes.

I don't like Berettas nearly as much as I like the CZ 75 variants. The CZ has always shot better for me, and felt more comfortable overall.

I own a Walther P38 which Beretta seemed to have copied/used for their initial design of the 92, even has the same locking block. I love that gun, and have no problem with the safety placement 🙂

I owned a Sig 2022 (My first pistol), didn't care for it that much and ended up selling it. 1911s don't appeal to me much either. They're pretty but...they're expensive.

There's plenty of risks... but most of them are just visual inspection. What kind of condition is the gun in? Somebody who owns guns for a while knows you need to keep things clean, so a quick visual check will show you if it was treated properly. You also don't know how many rounds have been through it for sure. There are a lot of springs involved in hand guns and they all have a useful life before you should replace them. It's usually not hard to replace springs and such, but it's something you have to consider. It's no different than buying a car... it's just a matter of figuring out how well it was treated and how many "miles" it has (w/out an odometer).

That said, buying used gets you good deals at times. It's especially good when you're new and don't know what you like yet. If it turns out you don't like the first gun you bought, selling it or trading it in hurts a lot less if you bought used in the first place. I was able to sell a used 1911 for the same price I bought it for a year prior.

Anyway, if you look at used guns bring somebody along to help check it out.

My first pistol I ended up buying was my 1911. It's a heavy gun but man oh man it's a dream to shoot.

Ammo probably depends on your area but I have always found 9mm to be pretty easy to come by compared to the other options. If you have the opportunity I would try out some CZ pistols as well
 
Of all my guns, my favorite is my .38 Super Colt Commander. It is like a smaller 1911 (which I also have). I would recommend getting one of these any day.
