Went sailing yesterday...only encountered 1 clueless power boat owner.

My Mom is out visiting so we rented a 22' Capri and spent about 4 hours sailing in San Diego Bay. We sailed up to the mouth of the harbor and then back to downtown. Wind was quite strong up near the mouth of the harbor so it was tricky sailing back, we had to tack a number of times as we were heading into the wind plus the tide was coming out and it was quite strong too.

A big auto transporter named Violet Ace passed by us going out of the harbor. That sucker was huge. Looked like someone took a skyscraper tipped it on its side and sailed it out of the harbor.

When we were heading toward downtown some douchenozzle in a 50' powerboat passed right in front of me at speed creating a large wake. Not very considerate...:thumbsdown:
 
Hopefully someone from Florida can come into this thread and explain why the 50' driver was actually in the right.

Powerboaters think the same way about you ragboters you know. 😉

It's like drivers vs. bicyclists except in the water.

It's quite comical until someone gets hurt/run over.

Sometimes I wish I was on the left coast to enjoy a longer season. Try sailing offshore at Cape Hatteras in November once. D:

I grew up sailing in upstate NY and sailed on boats up to 43' in length. Raced on Lake Ontario on a 30' Pearson for a season and sailed offshore here in SoCal on and off for the last 20 years.

Never owned a boat of my own but I've sailed in plenty of rough weather. Hit 40 knot winds and 15' seas coming back from Catalina Island on a 38' sailboat once. I've even sailed when it was snowing out. 😀

It was around 65 degrees here yesterday and the wind was blowing about 10-15mph. That little 22' Capri is a fun boat.
 
15' seas...not bad.

Two weeks ago we had 25 footers. In a gale warning now and supposed to be near 30' by friday. This is offshore of course but that's where the fun is.

I miss our 51' Morgan.
 
What's a matter with you. You're lucky enough to be out there enjoying a magnificent day and you title your thread after the one minor event that you didn't like.

Not me. I've sailed before and hate it.

I like powerboats and jetskis. I like being in control, putting my boat exactly where I want it to go, when I want to go there. I like the thrill of the throaty growl of the engine, the response when I give it throttle, and the fun and convenience of powerboating and jetskiing.

My dad, on the other hand, is the polar opposite. He has multiple sailboats, his favorite being a McGregor, however, since we live in Kansas, he sails on the lakes here. He likes the peacefulness, serenity, and beauty of the sailboats.

No I had eggs and toast this morning. I am just jealous that I cant get out and enjoy a day on the water like you.

We're getting buried by snow as I speak. Everything is closed. Everything looks beautiful.

Unfortunately, I might have to shovel later on.

On 2nd October 2010, Ha Long Shipbuilding Industry Company successfully launched the 4,900 unit car carrier No.2 namely Violet Ace (HL02).
The launching ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Nguyen Hong Truong, Deputy Minister of Transport Ministry, Chairman of Vinashin Group; Mr. Nguyen Van Doc, Deputy Provincial Party Secretary, Chairman of Quang Ninh People’s Committee and Mr. Nguyen Đuc Long, Deputy Provincial Party Secretary.



This vessel is a big size car carrier in the world. This modern car carrier has complicated features and is designed by Naval Progetti Design Institute (Italy). Classification Society DNV (Norway) approved its design, supervised the construction, classified the vessel as 1A1 – the highest level for car carriers. Violet Ace is 185.6 meters long, 32.26 meters wide and 36.10 meters high and runs at speed of 19.8 nautical miles per hour without limit in the field of operation.

The ship has 13 decks, including 11 garage decks which can accommodate 4,900 cars of different types, 1 crew deck and 1 cabin deck. In addition, there is also a volley ball yard, a sports house, a mini swimming pool, a heliport on the ship.

Violet Ace is the second ship built by Ha Long Shipping Company under the contract between the company and an Israel-based group named Ray Shipping.

The success of newbuilding the 4900 car carrier and other series of products has affirmed professional skill and prestigious of Ha Long Shipbuilding Company.

😵 I am in control of my boat and can put it exactly where I want it to go. The 22' boat I've been renting has a small outboard engine but I've never used it.

When you get there is just a matter of leaving yourself enough time.

Sorry 'bout that. I grew up in upstate NY so I know what you're going through. When I was growing up my Mom had a 27' O'Day on a lake near Amsterdam, NY. She was always the first one to get the boat in the water each year and the last to have it hauled out. Like I said, I've sailed when it was snowing. 😎

I really had a great time yesterday. I can't stop smiling when I think about it and I can't wait to do it again.
