I did tax returns part time for H&R Block for a couple years. They don't pay crap unless you only work during the peak times and do a ton of returns. It isn't worth it. Maybe it's different in their call center but I doubt it. Are you dealing with H&R Block offices or are you dealing with the public at large? If you're dealing with the public...good luck. They're all blithering idiots.

A job that pays the bills, puts food on the table, pays taxes and helps out the economy is no job to be ashamed of. Congrats. I know the feeling. When I first graduated I was in a rut for 6 months with no job until I came upon my first call centre job as well.

Now the last thing I look for is a job in a call centre environment. Being stuck in a cubicle is not fun.

Congrats dude!

I hope I get a job when I graduate also! The j ob market is 'picking' up in England so this year they have an increase in recruitment.

Yeah, why aren't you trying to get into graduate school?

Anyway, big congrats to you. I've been jobless since last november and just got hired this last week too. :D I'm a junior accountant now at a great firm here.

Gratz!

I have my own job situation now. Had been looking for a "good" job for roughly 3 years. Finally, started a new job approximately 2 months ago and ditched the dead end place I was at. Absolutely love the new job. I am well supported, the people I work with are great, and I have a ton of fun. I could be making a little more though.

Well, a good friend of mine called me yesterday. About 2 years ago, his place had an opening, and I applied, but lost out to the team lead's buddy. Well, they will be having another opening. The good part, it's close to $5 more per hour than what I get now. And I'm told there is lots of potential to make more (he's a VERY trustworthy source, and not trying to "lure" me in). Couple downsides though, and they're pretty hefty ones, to me at least. The job itself, not as fun as what I got now, not learning as much new stuff. Basically, help desk tied to the phone. And the other, technically it's a contract position. It's fully benefitted, paid holidays (gov't holidays too!), sick time, vacation, etc etc, and as of now, the shortest tenured person has been there about 4 years (my friend has been there between 8 and 9 yrs I think). But, as a contract job, it could be yanked at any time. It's a bit of a commute as well, little longer time wise than what I do now, but I'd be driving the whole way where as now I take the bus.

Whatever happens, I'm gonna regret part of my decision unfortunately....

why does everybody think the genetics degree is such a big deal???? I thought it was easier than the MIS....

I would love to go back to school and work on an MBA and/or my Masters in Genetics, but we can't afford it and I don't know what I'd do with the extra schooling. I thought it might be helpful in a computational genetics role or something similar, but none of the companies I've looked at really had much to offer in those type of roles (bioinformatics).

to be perfectly honest, the genetics degree was more of a 'it's fun - why not?' degree for me. I was pretty close to having it by the time I switched to MIS, so I just finished it for the hell of it (and because I didn't want to have wasted all those credits for nothing). I'd love to hear more input from you guys though...

thanks for all the replies guys...

i didn't answer a question in my last post, so: I would start Nov 1, and the position would run through approx. April.

I know that I will learn to hate the phone and that call center work is one step above telemarketing in terms of job satisfaction, but this will hopefully be a gateway job to bigger and better things.

Again, thanks for all the kind words.
