Went home to grill for lunch.

Belgian Waffler
Had to go home to pick up something I forgot earlier, so I figured I might as well grab some lunch on the way. Had my choice of arby's, taco hell, wendy's, BK, McD's, and a host of other grease joints. So what did I pick?

I stopped at publix, picked up a package of cube stakes, a couple of tomatoes, and some tortilla chips, went home and fired up the grill, and 10 minutes later I had made myself and my wife some lovely grilled cube steak sandwiches (prepped the steaks by rubbing A1 on them top and bottom) complete with provolone, lettuce and tomato and a side of chips and salsa.

Total cost to eat (per plate): about $3

Cheaper than the sub I was contemplating getting from publix and a hell of a lot tastier than any of the aforementioned craphole establishments.

Just thought I'd share. /blog

the cubing process tenderizes the meat, though the short cooking time doesn't do anything to add tenderness.

To be honest, the ones I got apparently had a bit more fat in them than usual (you could tell when I pulled them out of the package and flipped them over. Normally they get tough, but that's because people usually pan fry them and overcook them. They were on the grill for no more than 5 minutes tops total. I had figured I had overcooked them, but they were as tender as can be.

Cube steaks are pretty thin, so it doesn't take long to cook them through, especially over an open flame.

Yep. Love me some cube steak. Has a real nice beefy flavor. And you're right, you don't need to grill them long at all, just a few minutes on each side.

1. Not all of us live close enough to home to even be able to go home to cook anything.
2. Grilling takes too much time.
3. Many people want to eat and relax on lunch time.

the cost of taking .5hr off work to do that is way more than i would save by cooking it myself

You don't get a lunch break?
i can take the time off, but still need to work 40 hrs a week. so if i take an hour to go to the store, go home, cook, get back to work, thats an hour I gotta work some other point in the week (or end up charging precious PTO)

My last job was close to home but no way could I go to the market, heat up the grill, fix that shit and then have time to eat.

1. I live 10 miles away, takes me normally 15-20 minutes one way to drive.
2. Like I said, between firing up the grill and actually cooking, 10 minutes tops. I was prepping the meat, lettuce & tomato and roll in the mean time.
3. Working in the kitchen/grill is FAR more relaxing to me then sitting in some loud restaurant, going through some drive through, or sitting at my desk poking ATOT every few minutes for entertainment.

I'd say my lunch break was 1.5 hours, and that included going to the post office to mail some crap out too. But then again, most people disappear for 2 hours at a time here, but we all get our work done, and I generally either come in early or stay late.

Sounds nice but there is no way in hell I would have all that done in 10 minutes. Maybe if it was all laid out when I got home like a food network cooking show then yeah but come on, who the hell is grilling for lunch when they don't work at home.

wait. your not supposed to be a non conformist. your required by your peers to stand in line and buy conformist populous industrial fast food.

Me, apparently.

Takes me 30 mins with no traffic each way to get home 🙁

I need to get a house much closer to work next time.

welcome to the man-club. getting meat and throwing that son bitch over a open grill. Im in Puerto Rico at the moment on a business trip. Instead of the paid hotel, I chose to staying at my mothers house. Every time I need food, I fire up the grill and go hunting in the jungle for chickens. THIS right here ladies and gentleman, is how you grow hair on your nuts. Im still looking for the chupacabra to eat.
