Went for child support review a couple of weeks ago

Its been 6 - 7 years since my last child support review, and for some reason the attorney generals office wanted to do a review.

So I am sitting in this court room with probably 100 people in there. The court starts calling names, half the people on the list are not there. At 10:00am a bench warrant is issued for everyone that has not showed up.

Some of the people owed anywhere from $7,000 - $104,000 in back child support. Several people owing in the $20,000 - $25,000 range were put on 10 years probation instead of sending them to jail.

The guy that owed the $104,000, I guess his mom came up there to talk to the judge. She was saying "I do not understand how he can owe this much." The judge told her something like "he has not paid anything in years, and the last time we looked at his case he owed around $75,000. Plus, the account draws 6% interest."

My child support went up about $100 for the next 8 months, which is when my son turns 18. When he turns 18 support goes back down to what it was has been.

There were several cases where people owed $10,000 - $15,000 back support, have not worked in 6 or 8 months. In some cases their were people that had not worked in almost a year. The men were living with their girlfriends, letting the woman pay all the bills, and not paying a single thing to support their children.

I just do not understand how some of those people can live with themselves knowing they are doing nothing to support their children.

I am guessing it is because they are "ghetto street thugz" that knocked up a girl and bailed out on them and they don't want to give a dime. I can't blame them. Child support is BS.

If you don't want to pay child support...keep your dick in your pants.

And the people that owed more than $25k were sent to debtor's prison?

They probably put that guy on probation because its not like he was going to be sending extra money if they put him in prison instead. At least, that would be the logical thing to do.

People from the AGs office were calling the parents into a room to see if they could negotiate before going to the judge. It was a room about 15 x 15 feet square with 4 desk.

As the lady from the AGs office was looking over my case, the lady behind me was telling the guy the only thing they could offer him today was jail.

Several people were ordered to report to the adult probation office by a certain date.

But nobody was arrested on the spot while I was there.

During my last review several years ago, the judge ordered a man be arrested right then and there. The bailiff handcuffed the guy and chained him to a bench in the courtroom.

Joe Rogan had this guy on the podcast who is some sort of TV writer/producer. I think he's from Canada or something..> But basically they're billing him based on money he made back in the 1990's and they're wanting him to pay something like 300% of his current annual income.

So he can't goto see his kids or he'll goto jail.

Now.. .for other cases where the wife isn't bat s*** crazy and the husband is truely a bum, they probably deserve to sit in the clink for a while.

Wow... that's horseshit. No one should be legally required to pay child support once a kid hits 18. It would be the right thing to continue to help your kid, but you shouldn't be forced to.

I understand that in USA the states set at what age you become an adult and that is probably why child support can go beyond 18.

I have a daughter that is 15 years old. So I will be supporting her for the next 3 years.
I fined this pretty weird. So you pay for two kids right now right? But your child support will go up $100 for 8 months then it will go back down to the previous level before the $100 bump up but this time just for one kid? I'm sure you don't mind since you are taking care of your child but that seems odd.

My cousin got child support while she was in college. I think it stopped at 20, but I'm not sure. All I remember was her "father" being furious because he was really looking forward to being done with her at 18.

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure people aren't considered adults until 19 in Alabama.

Can't you go to court to get child support terms reviewed if your job starts making significantly less income? It's ridiculous that child support would be based solely on one snapshot of time without taking into account changing economic situations of either party.

Well there's a solution that fits.
x=old rate
x+100=new rate
new rate/2 = old rate

so x=$100. That's not bad for child support.
